Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

Watching Oregon 1 again, I don't see how Day wasn't irate about our corners being burned for big plays. They definitely changed up the back end by the Rose Bowl.

Knowles might have gotten more say over the DL calls afterwards, but I think he also got chewed out for big plays again. Honestly, I don't know if we ever saw what Knowles wanted to run.

But watch some Rose Bowl clips again. It's all coverage sacks. The D-line was getting home because the secondary was playing so well.
yes, it was clear in the cfp that we were getting to the qb. the biggest difference i saw was that our DEs stopped over-running the QB and letting them extend plays.

i’m not convinced that somehow our comebacks suddenly learned how to cover.

Here is the thing I can't get past:

Knowles is an older guy. That means he grew up in a world of "get it done or you are fucking fired" as pretty much just any old Tuesday at work.

I mean no one of my age cohort or older could get that bitter about being yelled at and having their job threatened. It's just not a pulse raiser in the long term. He's a Philly guy for fucks sake. He can't be that much of a pussy.

Something else had to have happened.
especially given how many times he talked about his thick skin owing to being a philly guy and having a philly cop father.

maybe he feels the need to move back closer to home to save his sister from defecating all over herself on the interwebs.

Maybe he watched Joel Klatt's way too early 2025 rankings and thinks he can bump his stock if he's the DC for 2 different CFP winning teams in back-to-back years.
Joel Klatt aside, not with Drew Allard at QB and not with his receivers. Kind of the opposite of what Day produced in his early years: too much talent on one side of the ball and not enough on the other.

This is what I was referencing in 2025 defense thread.

The coverage sacks were a direct correlation to how we utilized Caleb Downs.

The QB’s had to read Downs immediately for clue #1. Then they’d have to come off Downs, and read the CB’s/Ransom for clue #2.

By the time they could process that info, our D-line or blitz was getting home.

Saban called it “astonishing that OSU could make an experienced QB like Gabriel see ghosts”.

It’s bc Downs is a freak that has to be accounted for at all times. I don’t say this lightly at all….Downs may go down as greatest safety all time by end of his professional football career.
