Where's Herbie when you'd expect him to chime in asking what offensive high school player would want to play at tOSU. If he thought that THEN, how-do-ya-like-me NOW!?!?!?!

Demonstrate to the players and fans that this level of offense at OSU is unacceptable. I am one of Fickell's fans but he is a head coach now and not a defensive coordinator and time to make the call and show you have control of the program. As an Alumni I would be more impressed for him to get the permanent job with such a move.

It was truly pleasurable to see the master at work live in the Shoe, yesterday. I found his repeated use of the wildcat - a one-dimensional run-only gimmick act - while having one of the most athletic running QBs in the nation truly stupefying.

There are many things wrong with Jim Bollman's playcalling. Using the wildcat is not one of them, no matter how many times fans & announcers ignore the many valuable reasons to run it.

For starters, it is a productive running play (I believe the average was 6.7 ypc heading into this week), which is a welcome relief from the frequent 0-1 yders Dave yields on running downs.

People continue to harp on Braxton's ability to run that play as though he's durable. He's been a household name in Ohio for half a decade, yet people still overlook his struggles with staying healthy, which are exacerbated by his tremendous heart and aggression when running the ball.

I don't think Hyde is the guy to run it, but then again Hall isn't fully healthy right now, and limiting Boom's touches is also a goal. That was a new and unwelcome wrinkle, but possibly one where their hand was forced.

The wildcat is a joke, and fraught with risk as guys who aren't accustomed to faking and making handoffs are asked to do so in a situation where no threat of a pass exists. We saw what can happen in that situation yesterday.

Bollman's issues go beyond a specific play. His "offensive game plan" routinely looks like a hodge podge of plays with no rhyme or reason to the timing of their selection.

It isn't elegant, but it's pretty effective for many teams, including OSU.

I'm not arguing that. I'm simply calling out the wildcat as a part of that criticism.

If anything, OSU ran the wildcat far too little earlier this year. They'd run it, get 5-8 yds, then fail to run it again for at least 2 quarters, if not the entire contest. Meanwhile they'd run dave after dave into rugby scrums.

Because now opponents know we won't do shit with it. Even the announcers for the Purdue game said, "Everyone knows they do not pass out of the wildcat".

Change "it is a productive running play" to "it initially was a productive running play", and I'd agree. That 6.7 ypc stat is overly inflated due to several huge gains the first few times we ran it. It hasn't done jack shit that last 2-3 games.

As was pointed out by Blackledge yesterday the Wildcat is an effective change of pace for PSU, especially with McGroin as their QB in normal sets.

As much as tOSU runs the ball anyway, a nice change of pace would be to actually throw some nice slants....but I digress....

I don't mind running Boom out of the wildcat so much, but I don't think we needed to get cute on the play with the the fumbled handoff. Both fumbles came on wildcat plays.

One thing I did notice was some shorter passing routes, which indicates to me that we had no faith in our wideouts until Posey got back.
