I wouldn't etch that in stone. DA signed, what, a 3 year deal? Savage may very well look at it like he has Anderson for 3 years, then rather then pony up a [censored] ton of dough (if he's successful), let some team heap a huge contract on him and slide BQ into the spot. That, obviously, depends on BQ's patience. Plus good backup QB's are a hot commodity in todays NFL. Just a hypoythetical. But the possiblity of trading into the 1st round to get somebody like Jenkins would be hard to turn down.

Could be true. I hope he does it, but either way I think it's a win-win because I believe BQ could thrive in Chuds system. Maybe even more so than DA (provided DA has the same weaknesses as last season...hopefully he doesn't). I think Phil will look long and hard at the situation. Like I said, good backup QB's are a big thing nowadays, but the possibility of trading into the 1st round to help what is sure to be a weak secondary will certainly be tantalizing.

The best thing about DA, and he's one of the best in the league at it, is his quick reads. It's tough to imagine Brady Quinn getting rid of the ball any faster than DA does. And it sounds like DA has improved the middle throws, which could make him pretty deadly with the wweapons he has.

I think the problem with keeping DA or BQ around, is you constantly have to deal with fans/media asking for the back-up at the first sign of poor play. It's easy for coaches/upper management to blow it off, but it becomes a problem with the individual players and team.

Not to mention, Brady and Condon will not be content riding the bench while DA plays out his contract. If DA lays well this year, Condon will certainly be asking for permission to speak to other clubs wile Brady plays good teammate in interviews.

Jets win preseason opener as Favre watches

CLEVELAND ? Brett Favre's big-play ability rubbed off on the New York Jets, who scored three long touchdowns in a 24-20 win over the Cleveland Browns as their new star quarterback watched from the sideline Thursday night.
Dwight Lowery returned a punt 62 yards to score with 10:02 left to cap New York's comeback from a 10-point deficit. Lowery and Hank Poteat both intercepted passes by Ken Dorsey in the final four minutes to preserve the lead.
The Browns got yet another chance in the final seconds after a roughing-the-passer penalty and pass interference call put the ball on the 5. Dorsey's ninth straight incompletion on the possession fell short as time expired.
Favre, acquired late Wednesday night from the Green Bay Packers, joined his club an hour before kickoff, held a news conference, then watched one of his former teammates have a big night for his new team.

Lightning and heavy rain deprived the Browns' first teams of a full quarter's work in the team's preseason opener against the New York Jets on Thursday night at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
Each unit got in one series apiece and held a 7-0 lead before play was suspended with 4:11 to go in the first quarter. It was enough to declare the evening a mild success.
After play resumed one soggy hour later, the backups blew the lead and the Browns lost, 24-20.

Ewww, spoke too soon on Dorsey looking ok, sounds like he blew the drive after I switched it off. I would have been in favor of putting BQ in to put together a game winning drive. He scored twice against the Lions with several minutes in the 4th last year, would have been a good chance to practice the hurry up offense.

a few points:

the browns starting secondary was decent, their 2nd string and beyond, brutal. cousins definately showed why he should only be on slot wr's.

the DL looked decent. remember rogers and williams never played in a 3-4 before. as they get more comfortable they will only improve.

travis wilson may actually show that he can be the 3rd wr on this team.

as for DA and BQ, there is no way both are on the roster come '09. DA's contract is structured in a way that it is like a series of one year deals. it's a very tradable contract.

quinn's contract is incentive laden based on playing time. if DA is the guy, quinn will likely demand a trade, because sitting on the bench for a 3rd season will cost him a lot of scratch.

other than that, there isn't a lot to glean from this game as the starters didn't play much.

From the part of the game that I saw (and mattered) the Browns looked pretty good. DL looked stout. I have no problem with the bend but don't break D as long as the DL can control the line and the secondary can avoid the big play. I don't think we have any depth on D so we better hope for them to stay healthy.
The offense looked productive when it mattered. Both Anderson and Quinn were on target. I love the weapons. Braylon is making everyone forget that he is a scummer (except for the 2-3 drops that he is bound to have per game) Donte will be a good pickup. Wilson looked good, and Cribbs is the wildcard. We know what The Solja can do at TE and Rucker had at least one nice catch and looks like he could be a player.

The only thing I got from this game is that if the Browns go to their 3rd string QB, they are in trouble. But what team can't say that?

I know this was a preseason game and the first one so the 1st team DB's did not play very much so it was hard to get a read on the defensive backfield play. However, as the game progressed, it certainly looks like we need some DB backup help if we really want to make the playoffs. I don't even know who are nickel back will be.

I don't like the depth on the offensive line.

I have to disagree with you on this point. For the first time since the return they have depth at that position. Besides the starters of Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley,Tucker and Shaffer, they have two outstanding reserves in Rex Hadnot and Seth Mckinney.
Hadnot started in place of Tucker at right guard against the Jets and looked very good. Mckinney has been a starter and can play both center and guard. Both of those reserves could be starting for a lot of NFL teams right now. Massive (And still young) Isaac Sowells could develope in to a very good offensive lineman. Even old vet Lennie Friedman looked really good at times. His push on Wright's short touchdown run was beautiful.


Depth at Corner worries me. I like the two starters. Mcdonald was so impressive at corner last year in place of injured Eric Wright that the Browns felt safe unloading Leigh Bodden to the Lions. His closing speed and then tackle that set up the fourth and short on the Jets first drive was something to see! The kid is going to be a good corner. As is Eric Wright. These two are going to surprise a lot of people this year. I just pray neither of them are lost due to inury because after that the talent gets lean. Look for the Browns to be very active on the waiver wire as camp comes to a close.

I also heard rumors that Josh Cribbs may get some time in the defensive backfield! I just hope he gets more offensive touches.

Man, Donte Stallworth looked good. He's strong and so quick. He and DA seemed to have the timing down already.

I want to see more of Jerome Harrison! News on Brown's training camp daily said he may even get more touches than Wright this year but it didn't look that way after the Jet game.

That may be a unavoidable. Hopefully some quality, or at least serviceable CB's are available. Maybe Phil can swing a trade.

If that happens, we may be in serious trouble...defensively. I hope he is worked into the offense more, all he does is make plays.

Agreed. I've never seen much in Wright. Harrison is smallish and probably couldn't take much of a pounding, but Jamaal is a horse, so he won't need to. He's certainly a good change of pace, but if Lewis were to go down, we're in trouble.
