Jets vs. Browns (Preseason)

Looks like the Jets third string offense is better than the Browns third string defense. It only takes one preseason game to remind me why I'll never actually pay to attend one.

The good news? The real games start in 4 weeks. :)

No kidding. And don't they charge full regular season ticket prices for these games?

Dang, never like to see a guy immobilized and carted off with no movement, on any team. Hope it's not as bad as it looks.

So what does Farrve do if they tell him he has to compete for his job with Brett Ratliff?

So, somebody with some eyes on this game... tell me what's going on with the pass defense? Specifically, who is getting burned on these deep passes? Are they just scrubs, or scrubs that we're gonna have to actually count on this year?
I'm following online, but I'll weigh in with some thoughts. I'd assume the 1st team D was in for the 1st quarter. Clemens went 4-6 for 31 yards in that time. Not overwhelming. Ratliff came in in the 2nd I assume and launched a 71 yarder TD bomb. Somebody watching would have to say whether that was still the starters or the 2nd team. Either way, with the Browns DB's propensity for injuries, it would concern me if the guys being counted on for depth are getting burnt by scrubs. The run D appears to be stout, but I think the pass D will be a concern all year.

Yep, and season ticket holders have to buy them as part of the package. Pretty pricey for a glorified practice session against another team. They could play these "games" in training camp, if they weren't really just about the money.

I don't like the depth on the offensive line. There were a few good guys on the 2nd team, but there was not much movement on running plays. Fortunately their pass blocking was better than their run blocking, a few slipped through coverage, but not too bad. Travis Thomas as a running back missed a block picking up the blitz, disappointing as that was one of his strong suits in college.
The receivers looked pretty good, running backs looked good when the holes were there. We shot ourselves in the foot, when there was good blocking or a running play to the outside, we held and cost ourselves yards. I didn't see Anderson play, but Brady was sharp and Dorsey had a few good passes.
Defense was kinda all over the place, no comment here really.

I know there are good reasons for NOT doing it, but I would have turned it back over to Quinn with three minutes left and tell him to go put together a game-winning drive. Take advantage of the situation to further his development rather than continuing the mop-up duty for Dorsey.

Positives:
-DA and BQ both looked very sharp.
-Travis Wilson looked good.
-The new DL looked stout.

Negatives:
-Secondary. This was my main concern coming in to the season and tonight did nothing to ease that. The DL may help by getting more pressure on the QB, but if there isn't significant improvement, we're gonna have to win several shootouts.

Man, Dorsey is brutal. I didn't realize it was possible to go 0-12 on a single drive.

His line: 8/26, 139 yds., 2 INT. I'm glad we have two good QBs ahead of him.

If Chud wasn't the OC, the "Cool Dude Who Drives the Bus" might actually be driving a bus.

You ain't kidding. Good thing he has a good head on his shoulders, otherwise he wouldn't be qualified to be a ballboy.

Quinn looked really sharp and that makes me feel better that he could step in if DA were to continue his late season struggles. That shouldn't be necessary though as DA, by all accounts, has worked his ass off to improve his short/intermediate game. It'll be interesting to see how long BQ will be content to be a backup if DA cements himself as I do think he has what it takes to be a successful starter in the NFL.

Either DA or BQ will be a very nice asset going into the draft. One of these guys won't be here next year...guaranteed.

It kind of sucks that DA faces one of the all-time brutal schedules in Browns history, but I still think he controls the job making BQ an extra first round choice.

The great thing about having a piece like BQ, is he is instantly better than any rookie QB. I would imagine the Browns could of had Atlanta's #3 if they wanted it. BQ or Matt Ryan?

Next years draft class at QB, is pretty brutal. How about BQ for Malcolm Jenkins?

I wouldn't etch that in stone. DA signed, what, a 3 year deal? Savage may very well look at it like he has Anderson for 3 years, then rather then pony up a shit ton of dough (if he's successful), let some team heap a huge contract on him and slide BQ into the spot. That, obviously, depends on BQ's patience. Plus good backup QB's are a hot commodity in todays NFL. Just a hypoythetical. But the possiblity of trading into the 1st round to get somebody like Jenkins would be hard to turn down.
