Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

Possibly because they have a curmudgeon for a coach.....and the only people that have anything against these things are curmudgeons.

For the record, I can go full frontal curmudgeon with the best of them but my bitch isn't with the alt uni concept. I have conceded the field on that one.

My problem is with THIS alt uni.

It's fucking awful but since they made the numbers black and added the scarlet shoes, I am not quite as nauseous.

I'll pretend it's 1987, put on my fedora and be a curmudgeon

I want to see those clowns in full-on, top to bottom, semi-monochromatic houndstooth.
Once Saban retires I'm sure you will.

That change on the Bama uniform was so subtle it was hardly noticeable.
True, but it still showed that Bama was open to some type of change. Like the post in the 11W board I posted stated, some teams like Bama and Ped St preferred to remain traditional (for how long is anyone's guess). But the writing is on the wall that took much money is to be made gt creating alternative uniforms for fans to wear. CFB is BIG business whether people want to admit it or not. If NFL teams can trot out throwbacks, color rush, breast cancer awareness, camo, etc jerseys than CFB will follow suit.

I don't mind an occasional changes, provided it keeps with our color scheme and at least somehow relates to our past (e.g., the uniforms we wore last year against Nebraska). At least with those uniforms, you could have even a casual college football fan look at the game (sound muted, no on-screen graphics), ask him what was the team in the alternate uniform, and he'd likely guess "Ohio State" by the color scheme. The 1942 throwbacks were pretty cool, too, in that they at least resembled something the team wore/would've worn back at the time and kept the color scheme. Even the one they'll wear Saturday would've been acceptable if the kept the current helmet and had more scarlet accent (numerals, pant stripes).

I’m with this. Do alternates, whatever. Just make them good damnit.

I hear you. Though I hated those unis against Nebraska. Agree to disagree

If it's about branding, then being consistent, using MODERATE changes to update, is what you do. If it's about history, then go full NFL and recreate the uniforms of the past. Ohio State will sell gear because they win, not because they are willing to let the costume folks in the theatre department design a jersey for one game a year.

Think about the most successful team in all of sport - the Yankees. Do you see them fucking with pinstripes? Do you see them lacking in sales of Yankee gear?

If kids were crazy about whack job uniforms and whack job uniforms made them decide on where they wanted to play, Oregon would be Alabama.

We sold a shit ton of merch in 2002. Didn't fuck with the uniforms. This notion of needing to wear alternate uniforms is pure horseshit. Nike isn't dropping tOSU for refusing to whore out the brand. Recruits aren't going to go elsewhere if we shun black jerseys.

Like jax, I've accepted this reality. Alternates are a reality despite my hatred of them. But taking an iconic uniform and dumbing it down so it looks like a quarter of the 120 FBS teams isn't just ugly, it's stupid. The people who buy alternates will buy them if they're ugly or not. So why not tie them into our history? Is there not a single Buckeye fan working for Nike?

You're missing the point. Nike gives a bunch of ideas to the OSU AD, coaches, etc, and they choose amd gice input. Its not just Nike doing this for money. But tOSU staff choosing these jerseys. The blame needs to.stop going at Nike, if youre unhappy than point your finger at UFM, he and Smith have the final say on what gets worn.
