Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

 I can tell you right now that Mariota didn't go to "Nike U" because of the uniforms.

I can't speak for the others. But for you to insinuate that not one of the players you listed would have "ever heard of" Oregon had they not had those hideous uniforms, I can only say that the offer letter they received from Oregon would've made them aware real quick-like.

I don't see Alabama garb, or Clemson garb, or Michigan garb, or Ohio State garb, either, other than that being worn by fans of those teams. But again, I see didn't see squat for Oregon garb here until Mariota went there.
Oregon isn't on Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, or Ohio State's level without their jersey combinations. That's the point. I'm sure those kids got letters from more than Oregon, yet they chose Oregon. Bama's got Saban, Ohio State has Urban, Oregon has Nike. That's their thing. It clearly has worked.

For the record, I can go full frontal curmudgeon with the best of them but my bitch isn't with the alt uni concept. I have conceded the field on that one.

My problem is with THIS alt uni.

It's fucking awful but since they made the numbers black and added the scarlet shoes, I am not quite as nauseous.

I'll pretend it's 1987, put on my fedora and be a curmudgeon

Oh for sure. A legit complaint is that they are ugly. That's fine.....they pretty much are. A curmudgeon complaint is that alts even exist. IT'S SCARLET AND GRAY...NOT ALT JERSEYS AND RAP MUSIC. THEY TOOK URRRR JUURRRRRBS.

We sold a [Mark May] ton of merch in 2002. Didn't fuck with the uniforms. This notion of needing to wear alternate uniforms is pure horse[Mark May]. Nike isn't dropping tOSU for refusing to whore out the brand. Recruits aren't going to go elsewhere if we shun black jerseys.

Like jax, I've accepted this reality. Alternates are a reality despite my hatred of them. But taking an iconic uniform and dumbing it down so it looks like a quarter of the 120 FBS teams isn't just ugly, it's stupid. The people who buy alternates will buy them if they're ugly or not. So why not tie them into our history? Is there not a single Buckeye fan working for Nike?

This isn't about needing to do them, because of course everyone involved knows they're not needed, but why would you turn down $42.7 million for your AD every year plus all that merch royalty money from a fanbase that will buy anything you put out, as well as the excitement it generates with your current players as well as recruits? That's what it all comes down to, and it comes down to UFM and Smith, as @pnuts34 said. So, considering "trust the coaches" and all that jazz, on this one I'll give them a pass on the overall alt uniforms thing. This year's uniforms specifically, yeah, they're slightly better than ass, but hey, they still look somewhat sharp and the kids love it, and it will generate a bunch of money for the AD to help fund all those olympic non-revenue sports. Could they better? Yeah, of course, but they also seem designed on a general "template" for the year across all the schools that will wear alternates, so it probably comes down to what fits their template designs for the year. I'm sure if UFM and Smith really pushed it, Nike would do a more unique/fitting alternate, but likely at a reduced payout.

It clearly hasn't done anything to truly hurt the program, brand, or tradition, so I see no reason to get much more than mildly annoyed during the years when the design isn't as good as it could be (this year).

And most, if not all, of Oregon's success happened while USC was at its worst. Now that they're "back"-at least in recruiting-Oregon hasn't really been relevant.

I liked the black helmets with the regular jersey we beat scUM wearing last year.
I liked the throwbacks we beat Nebraska with last year.
I tolerated, surprising even myself, the all black uniforms

The rest have been, in my opinion, hot garbage. But, all that said, I watch to see the Buckeyes play and win. If they came out in sundresses and top hats, I'd still watch and hope for soul crushing victory over whoever lines up across the field. As to the debate regarding tradition - hey, I'm there with you.. I'm an old dog at this point and I don't see the point in fancy new gear to play your big games in... but... I'm also 47, not 20.

At least they spell Scarlet.... If it bothers Franklin it can't be that bad. At least they should match the weather.

make everything that is dark grey/black, scarlet and I would actually like them

the more I see it in better pictures the less I hate it anyway

those 1942 throwback things for The Game that one year were the worst
