Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

If you don't think Oregon's partnership with Nike/Phil Knight and all of their jersey combinations are a HUGE selling point during recruiting, then you are ignorant beyond belief. It's not 1960 anymore.

Saying Oregon's improvement is because of the jerseys was stupid. Trying to alter your argument doesn't change how dumb it was in the first place.

THIS didn't have anything to do with it...it was just the jerseys, right? Not where they hang them:

but what color they are?

What Pheasant said, but it's not just the locker room. Oregon's football-players-only dorm, financed by Phil Knight, is a palace. It would be incredibly naive to think that kids take a look at that place on their official visit and then decide based on clothing. Sure, some people (who need to have their y-chromosome checked) care more about clothing than I do. Even so, the suggestion that this is not "lost in the noise" of the Oregon facilities is one of the most laughable arguments made on these boards in a long time.

You agree with that?

Partially. Young adults who are into instant gratification and are raised in a culture that worships them from the age of 12 are easily swayed by baubles and glitter. They might see it as being able to customize themselves on NCAA 2012 over on the old PS3. Apologies if already posted/linked:

There is next to no reason the University of Oregon should have a good football team. Eugene is a small city and is not near a major media market, there's very little local college-caliber talenthttp://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6909937/how-does-oregon-football-keep-winning#footnote1 and for literally 100 years the Ducks did almost nothing but lose.http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6909937/how-does-oregon-football-keep-winning#footnote2But the past decade and a half has been different. They've been to the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and last year's national championship game, and they will start this season Saturday night against Louisiana State in Arlington, Texas, ranked third in the country. How did this happen? At the top of the list of reasons: their uniforms.
Hyperbole?
Not to Rachel Bachman. "It all starts with the uniforms," said the sports business reporter for the Oregonian.
Not to Paul Swangard. "The uniforms, I think, more than anything else," said the managing director of the university's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center, "are probably the key ingredient."
And not to Tinker Hatfield. "What is a more visible way to turn up the heat and create a personality," the famous Nike designer said, "than through the football uniforms?"http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6909937/how-does-oregon-football-keep-winning#footnote3
Oregon clearly is the beneficiary of its unique relationship with Nike boss Phil Knight, a 1959 alum who has used his fortune to give the Ducks every potential material advantage. But the most consistently conspicuous portion of Knight's lavish contributions are the team's much-discussed uniforms — the yellows and the greens, the blacks and the grays, the highlighter neons and the stormtrooper whites, the many different helmets and jerseys and pants and socks and shoes, the more than 500 possible combinations in all.
The football Ducks of Oregon are something new. They didn't get people to watch because they got good. They got good because they got people to watch. They are college sports' undisputed champions of the 21st century's attention economy.

But the rest of the impact from Nike, including the Belotti/Kelly hires and the tons of money for the new facilities and so forth (while the rest of the University is cutting programs and raising tuition/fees) are also "huge" impacts.

Oh, and MD's point about blowing goats is valid... although I'm not sure how he became an expert in that.

In less time than that you could find someone who agrees that the US has never landed on the moon, world leaders are in fact alien lizard hybrids & the government has been suppressing a car that runs on water for the pat 40 years.

Ahh I see Saw already beat me to it.

Well, explain this:

From the link I posted previously. It's not a direct cause/effect relationship, but the jerseys definitely correlate to recruiting success. Obviously the facilities matter, but those are directly related to Phil Knight, just like the jerseys/gear.

So Phil Knight is doing all these fucked up jerseys to help The Ohio State University recruit better? That sense does not make...

You have more than inferred that the success that has brought Oregon to prominence is bringing in talent because of the uniform combinations. You didn't say dick about the facilities or the style of ball played under Belotti/Kelly. Talk about waffling. :shake:

I don't know exactly where you got your initial concept regarding the uniform combinations, but I can tell you based on 1) close proximity and 2) the inundation of Duck history I've received since being out here that your argument about uniform combinations leading to ascendency in the football world is flawed. Furthermore, Phil Knights financial contributions to the school and what his company provides in uniforms are not synonymous.

All things remaining equal, if Knight's investment in Duck athletics didn't include new uniforms (costumes is more like it*) I don't see how anyone can make an argument they wouldn't have played Auburn for the title last year.

Oh, and Tibor trained him.

I can see how young kids like a team just for the jersey because its been happening for years, especially here in ohio...i grew up liking the oakland raiders and the charlotte hornets soley for the jersey colors...so oregon for example has a few jerseys i do like, the all black and the white with the silver wings...so as a young kid if i grew up liking those jerseys im sure i would grow up liking the team as well...a recruit that likes the team because of the jerseys and then travels to eugene and sees their facilities is pretty much sold right then and there...it may not always work this way with all the recruits but its not idiotic to think that oregons jerseys have had some sort of impact on their recruiting success

Really? Take a look back at how long Nike has been pimping their roller derby jerseys...it's been well over a decade, and yet Oregon went 7-6 in 2002, 8-5 in 2003, 5-6 in 2004, and 7-6 in 2006 despite their flashy unis. Yep, those unis sure attracted top-flight recruits then, didn't they? :roll1:

So even though it's not 1960 anymore your point is still stupid as fuck. Maybe you should take a break from posting on football forums until you get out of puberty...

So you don't think the fact that Phil Knight is a booster (x10) for his Ducks has made Oregon into what it is today? You also don't think it's a huge selling point for Chip Kelly and the rest of the coaches when recruiting? I'm also not sure what you're referring to as far as getting out of puberty, since I didn't know one could be "in puberty," but I'm actually in college. Therefore I have passed the stage of my life in which puberty takes place. I think that's what you were getting at.
