Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

I can see how young kids like a team just for the jersey because its been happening for years, especially here in ohio...i grew up liking the oakland raiders and the charlotte hornets soley for the jersey colors...so oregon for example has a few jerseys i do like, the all black and the white with the silver wings...so as a young kid if i grew up liking those jerseys im sure i would grow up liking the team as well...a recruit that likes the team because of the jerseys and then travels to eugene and sees their facilities is pretty much sold right then and there...it may not always work this way with all the recruits but its not idiotic to think that oregons jerseys have had some sort of impact on their recruiting success

And again, you're not "joining a team", you're picking a college. If a recruit is picking a college because of the uniforms, then I say go to Oregon with my blessing. We don't need or want that recruit...

So you don't think the fact that Phil Knight is a booster (x10) for his Ducks has made Oregon into what it is today? You also don't think it's a huge selling point for Chip Kelly and the rest of the coaches when recruiting? I'm also not sure what you're referring to as far as getting out of puberty, since I didn't know one could be "in puberty," but I'm actually in college. Therefore I have passed the stage of my life in which puberty takes place. I think that's what you were getting at.

Did you pick the college you attend because of the uniforms?

Phil Knight as a booster (facilities and other improvements around campus) has indeed made a huge improvement in the status of Oregon...absolutely. You simply place waaaay too much emphasis on the impact the uniforms have made. They're an attention-getter...little more.

His point is that kids can grow up being a fan of Oregon based on the flashiness or whatever factor it may be, and then if the kid ends up being good enough to get offers from top schools, he would then probably want to play for his favorite team growing up. Whereas most people will become fans of teams/schools that their family went to or follow, there are some that become fans based on other things.

Nope, but I did choose my school based on being an Ohio State fan and wanting student tickets (though I since transferred back home), so if Oregon can get young athletes to be fans based on their new-age style and then ultimately play football there, then I say go for it...

I say let Oregon "go for it" too. Not TOSU...

That's the difference. Phil Knight poured TONS of money into that program for a decade in order to make them relevant. Schools like Ohio State and your traditional powers don't need gimmicks and flashiness to get players. They are almost self-recruiting.

Lesser schools (most recently Maryland) are going to try and emulate what Oregon did to create success. They obviously won't have as much success since there aren't boosters like Phil Knight at Maryland, but it should have a somewhat positive effect.

Excellent. I believe you are starting to understand why us *"old farts" are so against this stuff. Why do we need Nike calling the shots? If TOSU dropped Nike tomorrow, every apparel company on the planet would be lining up to put their logos on our jerseys. Those jerseys and those colors are one way to keep our traditions intact and alive. "Traditions" are how we honor those who came before us and made TOSU the great University it is today. And that is why junking "tradition" is so abhorrent to so many of us. It's insulting to those who came before...

*I may be a "stale fart", but I am no "old fart".

and i never said we wanted or needed said recruit...but i guarantee you that in ohio state's case, that we have gotten a recruit from out of state because when he was 5 years old he grew up liking the buckeyes solely because he liked our jerseys...not because he liked john cooper's awesome Russell Athletic Hat, or because he loved how chris speilman played on defense...its because of the jersey....then this recruit gets his dream offer to ohio state when he grows up and its a done deal...obviously when you get older things change...like i said when i was young as piss, i liked charlotte and oakland because i thought their uniforms were cool...growing up in 3rd thru 6th grade everyone loved Starter Jackets....and everyone had either the FSU starter jacket, San Jose Sharks or chicago white sox..and not one person could name anyone from those fucking teams...the browns starter jacket wasnt cool because the colors fucking sucked...so unless you were a die hard, you weren't wearing it or else you were made fun of....so why were they wearing those jackets or shirts from those teams? because the uniforms were fucking cool....i have friends who have liked michigan since they were 5 because of the uniforms....some still like that team to this day sadly, but whatever fuck them...so back to oregon...right now as we speak there are kids who will eventually play college football and get a D-1 scholarship to a school from out of state that they have liked since they were kids because of the school jersey...plain and simple...oregon's current success is not because of the jerseys entirely...its one of many reasons going on right now that makes them a hot team (awesome facilities, good coach, great offense that kids want to play in, multiple uniforms)...so you cant be naive and say that the jersey's dont have an impact on that school...obviously kids going to oregon don't care about the tradition there....what tradition does oregon have? kids come to ohio state for more pure reasons like tradition which is why it means something to be a fucking buckeye...my point is there is some correlation to oregon's recent success with recruiting and their jerseys...5%? maybe thats too much...but its a small percentage i believe

I don't care what Oregon does, and frankly I enjoy making fun of the newest crap they come up with. So more power to them. However, I would argue USC's probation has more to do with their recent recruiting success than their jerseys. But we'll just have to agree to disagree there...
