I posted this early this morning, without knowing that Irvin and Csuri would be on the stage back-to-back. Bumping it since it was almost 10 pages ago.

A random conversation sometime today between a Cane and a Buckeye.

"Damn, I'm psyched to see what Nike has put together for the 'U'. I can't wait to see camo and piping on the same uni."

"(rolling eyes to himself) Yeah, that'd look great with one sleeve green and the other orange."

"Probably would. Yo, there's Michael Irvin, he knows it's still all about the 'U' - dude was the 'Playmaker' back in the '80s".

"So is the Cane Pro Combat gonna be a throwback to the '80s unis?"

"Hope so, way back then to the first glory days. Hey who's that old dude up there?"

"That's Chuck Csuri, he's a professor emeritus at Ohio State."

"Professor what? Never heard of him or that."

"He's been on the faculty over 60 years. He's the Father of Digital Art and Computer Animation. His work has been exhibited in Europe and New York, and he taught a lot of people that ended up working at Pixar and Disney."

"OK, I'm down with Up - get it? But what's an old artist doing here for the football unis?"

"Well, he played for the Buckeyes on their first National Championship team under Paul Brown."

"Under who?"

"Paul Brown, as in the Cleveland Browns. He coached them to several pro titles, including 3 NFL Championships in the days before the Super Bowl. He also founded the Bengals."

"They had pro football before there was a Super Bowl? And hey, what position did the artist play, waterboy?"

"Very funny. Csuri played tackle on both lines, and was voted team MVP for the '42 National Champs."

"No shit. Hey, I like how the camo thing honors the military."

"Well, Csuri would know something about that, too. He was voted team captain in '43, but entered the Army before the season started. Ended up being a field artilleryman, and was awarded a Bronze Star for his actions during the Battle of the Bulge."

"No shit?"

"Yeah, no shit. But hey, your guy knows something about football players wearing camo. How'd that trip to the desert at the end of '86 work out?"

Does the flag have 48 stars? If it has 50, this isn't a true throwback.

I would bet that the flag has 50, it's based on the modern Army standard of having the blue field on the forward side of the wearer, as a flag would appear if seen on a powered vehicle or ship, being blown backward.

In WWII, the flags were worn with the blue field on the back half of the wearer. This was the standard from the early days when a flag would likely be seen flown from a sailing ship with the wind blowing toward the bow.

The Armed Forces made this switch sometime after Desert Storm 1 I believe.

I have a question, Did any of the players from the 1942 team die in World War 2?

There were 43 players on the 1942 team. The war claimed the lives of George Slusser, Bob McDonald, and Tom Cleary.

39 of the other 40 received their undergraduate degree, most of them after the war.

20 went on to complete a Masters program, and 4 earned doctorate degrees.

There's an excellent book about the 1942 team called Expanding Your Horizons, by Donald Steinberg, M.D., who wrote the book as the 50-year team anniversay approached in 1992. Steinberg was an end on the team, who became a starter after future NFL Hall of Famer Dante Lavelli was injured (and out for the year) in the 3rd game against USC.

Each player briefly talks about his life, his experiences on the '42 team, and the influence of Paul Brown.

One of the amazing facts I got out of that book was the 3 freshmen roommates in 1941. One was Dante Lavelli, who made the NFL Hall of Fame. Another was Les Horvath, who's #22 at tOSU is retired as the first Buckeye to win the Heisman Trophy. The third roommate was Don McCafferty, who coached the Baltimore Colts to a victory in Super Bowl V.

The heritage behind the flag "appearing" backward is actually pretty simple.

The flag is to represent the days of when American Soldiers would march into battle with an actual flag stead fast and strong, the wind blowing against them, causing the flag to flow and appear "backwards."

Extra tidbit. The opposite canton (field with stars) is ONLY allowed on a military member's right sleeve; the left sleeve for a normal facing flag.

The reason why you never see a US Airman with an opposite canton patch is because USAF AFI 36-2903 (Dress reg) roughly states that (on a flight suit) a member will optionally wear a fully colored, regular canton flag patch on the left shoulder, and a Squadron patch on the wearers right.

Uni Watch: Here's the latest college football news, hot off the Nike uniform press - ESPN

written by the guy who does the Uniwatch blog...pretty funny it has a Rolling Over In their Grave Rage Factor which rates each school and how pissed their alumini is by the new jerseys...ohio state got a 5

Ohio State

When it will be worn: Nov. 27, against Michigan.
Uni Watch says: Throwback-ish tribute to the 1942 squad is a nice idea, but the execution feels lacking. ... Gray pants + gray socks = one mighty grim look below the waist. ... Socks have "1942" woven in upside-down, which is supposed to inspire the players when they're suiting up, or something like that. ... As with the Bama uni, the American flag sleeve patch is not backward -- it's supposed to be that way. ... Best element: the bronze star decal on the helmet, a tribute to Charles Csuri, who played on the '42 team, earned a Bronze Star in World War II, and still teaches at the university. ... ROIG Rage Factor: 5.
