Jayson Oweh (DE Penn State Nittany Lions)

After talking with Oweh prior to, and following, his Ohio State visit and him telling me the Buckeyes lead, I was thinking about making this prediction. However, I wanted to see what the post-visit vibe coming out of South Bend and Notre Dame was before making a call.

I just think this is a Larry Johnson, Sr. special and that Oweh is an excellent fit for Ohio State and vice versa. I know Penn State is not going to be easy to beat here, but this is quickly turning in the Buckeyes direction.

Yeah. Think I will stand with Wade once again.

I could care less about rankings. This kid looks like he has Chase Young level abilities.

WANT.

Put him in a true DE class with Cox and Parsons...............Lordy.

In 3-4 years this guy is going to be a long 6'6, 270 running 4.6. Those players are the rarest in football and usually get drafted top 5, even if they're not close to a finished product. If LJ thinks he's got what it takes to get there, sign him up, regardless of who gets left out because of it.

Those measureables scream a player that Meyer coached at UF, Carlos Dunlap. But Oweh has a much better head on his shoulders but the ceiling is there to be as talented as Dunlap

Garrett, Clowney, Jordan, Ansah... the tall, freak athlete DE in the top 5 goes back to Bruce Smith and beyond. Sometimes it's a hit, sometimes it's a miss, but it shows the potential value of an athlete like Oweh at this stage in his development. With all the talent we're bringing in, he'd have a chance to learn from an elite DE group and the best DL coach in CFB. It feels like a great fit that could pay off immensely.

Oweh traveled with his father to Ohio State on June 9 for a Buckeyes camp. The trip allowed him to work with defensive line coach Larry Johnson, for whom he’s repeatedly expressed reverence. Johnson coached at Penn State from 1996 to 2013.

“I got a chance to work out with Coach Johnson and that was really big for me because he’s like a legend and the greatest defensive line coach there is right now,” Oweh said. “It was amazing to work with him on the field and that’s something I’ve hoped for since he gave me the offer and came to my school. He broke everything down to its simplest form, and since I’m new to the game it was a refreshing experience.”

Oweh also spoke with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, who visited Blair Academy in May. He also enjoyed some personal time with Urban Meyer in the head coach’s office.

“Ohio State was always big on my list and that was a great experience, so things haven’t changed,” he said.
Oweh said opportunities for early playing time appear more realistic at Notre Dame and Penn State. His focus would center more on development at Ohio State, where there seems to be greater likelihood for redshirt status as a freshman.

Oweh has set aside any desire to pursue a college career at tight end, where he impressed at The Opening’s New Jersey regional. Pittsburgh and Wisconsin are among programs that specifically offered an offensive role, but Oweh is pleased with his growth at defensive end in less than one full year at the position.

“I’m definitely getting stronger and improving my hand technique, which is what I was lacking,” he said.

I really like this kid's potential but you have to start wondering where we fit in all of these DEs. With Tyreke Smith and Micah Parsons still out there... will we even have room?

I wonder that as well. But it seems like the staff really wants Oweh in this class regardless. I have Parsons as "IN" right now and Tyreke Smith is in that same ballpark. I would keep in mind though that if somehow we land Cox, Parsons, Oweh and Smith, I do think Smith could end up as an athletic 3-tech ala Adolphus Washington. With the mass exodus we're about to experience at DE (Lewis, Holmes, Hubbard...likely Bosa the next year if he keeps it going) and Jones projected as an OL, that could actually make sense. Might make the other position numbers murky but loading up at DE is a priority in this class and Oweh's upside is absurd.
