His coach said that if they pushed his recovery he could be ready for the track season- but they won't do that.

His coach said that Javon is not interested in USC but is interested in Ohio State, Michigan State, and Tennessee. He doesn't want to talk to anyone else. He is visiting MSU this weekend and then to the "game" the following weekend.

Ringer recovering
By Kyle Nagel

Dayton Daily News

Javon Ringer, Chaminade-Julienne High School's star running back, had surgery to repair the injured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Wednesday. He had to sit at home during C-J's first-round playoff victory against Miami Trace on Saturday, but he should return to school today and continues to improve, he said.

The pain that woke him nightly and left him with a throbbing discomfort has decreased. But that's not the worst part.

"Sometimes I get an itch so bad, but it's under the brace," Ringer said. "That drives me crazy."

Not as frustrating as missing the rest of his senior season, though. Ringer said his doctors have told him he can begin rehabilitating and training on the knee in three to six weeks.

Ringer injured the knee Oct. 8, seven games into a season that had already seen him rush for 1,763 yards and 22 touchdowns.

His recruiting continues. Ringer plans to attend Michigan State's home game against Wisconsin this weekend as an unofficial visit if doctors sign off during a check-up Friday. The Spartans already have offered a scholarship.

Ringer's mother, Darlene, said Ohio State coaches had asked Ringer if he would consider gray shirting — delaying the start of the five-year eligibility window until January 2005, when he would enroll. It's the route St. Henry High School's Todd Boeckman, now a redshirt freshman, took. But Darlene Ringer said the family told Ohio State he wouldn't want to do that.

Ohio State is still working on its options, and Ringer most likely will schedule an official visit to Columbus soon, Darlene Ringer said. Meanwhile, USC, the top team in every national poll, offered Ringer a scholarship on Oct. 28, she said.

Get Well Javon and I hope you are a Buckeye!

Hopefully he will reconsider the gray shirt. It would give him additional time to heal, allow him to practice some Fall of next year and give him additional practice time spring '06 before the Fall season. I think he would also be able to take some classes next Fall to ease into college academics. The initial reaction of a great competitor like Ringer was to say no but it might be the best thing for him and it might be the best thing for the Buckeyes and a way to help his new team.

Any clue as to WHY we would be asking him to greyshirt???

Are we that confident that we are going to land two other backs? Or is his injury more severe than anyone is saying?

my initial guess is that osu had a a best case scenario laid out for themselves and they tried their hand at it. Ringer is likely going to have to redshirt due to his knee. It may not even be certain if he can act as a scout team back next year. OSU wants him badly nonetheless. However, only having 2 backs on schloarship going into next year is problematic. OSU would like to bring 3 backs in, in this class, and spread it out over 2 years. This way, osu could get gwlatney, wells, and ringer. without ringer greyshirting, it is a tough scenario.

however, this must make you feel that osu thinks they are in very good shape for a few backs, or else they wouldnt try such a proposition.

It may well be both....

As we saw last year with Morgan, their may be a pattern emerging about greyshirting for academic reasons. That is, admission standards at OSU are higher in the fall quarter than the other quarters. If the staff feels Ringer is marginal to get by admissions for the fall quarter, delayed entry may be the only option.

The injury may also be a factor. If Ringer had no injury, grades would be the ONLY reason to delay entry. But with the injury, the two factors (grades and injury) make a compelling argument for a greyshirt. No matter what spin is coming from his coach, it is unlikely Ringer will be at 100% next fall. With a greyshirt, he can practice in the spring and be ready to go 100% in the fall of 06.

Now, Ringer may not see it that way and from the comment of his mother this appears to be so. A lot has to do with the trust level with the OSU staff. If you recall, Graessle (the kicker/punter now at Pitt) was offered a greyshirt, which he turned down, all the time claiming OSU was his first choice. His family made the argument that the greyshirt offer was not guaranteed as Tressel might not be there when it came time to go on schollie. I thought at the time this was bullshit, but it was his choice. However, I did dispute quite vigourously after the decision the claim that Graessle really was that high on OSU since he turned down the offer.

Ringer may be a similar case. Although reputed to be a diehard Buckeye fan, he may see the greyshirt offer as insulting. He may also feel that financially he cannot afford to come to OSU on his own dime for a quarter. Of course, he COULD delay coming to OSU at all until he goes on schollie (which is apparently what Pettrey is doing). But if he didn't enroll part-time in the fall, he would not be able to pariticipate in pre-season camp in 05 nor in any bowl practice prior to the start of winter quarter.

My gues is that as soon as Ringer confirms his offers are still good at MSU and Tennessee he will tell OSU to take a hike. I hope he end up at UT, because at least I won't have to watch him rack up the yards against OSU.

I have always thought this about Ringer greyshirting. I mean he will need to redshirt next year and rehab his knee anyway, so why not greyshirt, and don't lose a year and then if he is good enough as a true freshmen they play him. If not he then redshirts that next year.

Come on Grayshirt? Kid is a major talent. I would tell OSU to go fly a kite also.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Besides, if he grayshirts I don’t think he gets to take advantage of the universities facilities to finish rehabbing his knee. I could be w<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:PersonName>ron</st1:PersonName>g but don’t think so.<o:p></o:p>

I believe he is a huge OSU lean but at some point he may get frustrated.

Agreed. For the love of God, offer the kid! He has done everything asked of him and wants to be a Buckeye. If his grades are there make him a full offer. We need him. He wants to be a Buck. Assuming he qualifies, get it done.

I view the grayshirt offer as a very noble jesture on OSU's part... I truly believe this was not just an afterthought... The key issue for Ringer has been the books.. this would permit him a year to get his studies AND his knee in order... thus better preparing him for LIFE...

now if the focus is merely that OSU is but a stepping stone to the NFL, then I could see someone having a problem with the proposal... but I would then have a problem with the recruits thinking process... what is the avg career expectancy of an NFL RB - 2.5 yrs?? and that's assuming you make it at all.. whereas you still have to make a life for yourself for the next 50 yrs thereafter...

I commend OSU for making a proposal which truly is in the recruits best interest... I see it as a classy move...

It is a classy move on OSU's part, however, the average high school football player that is being recruited for this level of college ball probably has serious expectations of playing on Sundays. I hope that Javon is not the average high school player.

Also, there is always the argument (I like to call it the LeBron factor) that a player can always return/go to college if their professional career does not work out. Most professional athletes make enough in their brief careers to afford their own four year degree. As to whether the majority would return to develop that second career, who knows.

and therein lies the problem... let's say that a 'school at this level' provides 5 individuals to the pros a year... in 4 years, that's 20 kids... a school has 85 guys on schollie... so out of a given team, that would be about 23% will get drafted.. and not all will make it... I commend the school that is trying to help the 77% that won't get drafted.. plus half of the others who probably won't make it past year one... that's my point...

Grey-shirting would indeed be an ideal situation for Javon. Enrollment(full-time) is only delayed three months, not a year. Even if he is now fully qualified even he should realize that it was a struggle to get there. He can take some classes fall quarter, not have to worry about a full football schedule, get on solid academic footing, and join the team for bowl practice. He comes in the following spring as a true freshman with 5 years to play 4, doesn't need to rush his rehabilitation and has had time to become academically acclimated.
Of course if he is only interested in Ohio State as a waystation on his way to the NFL, I say we pass.

I don't disagree with you at all. I just don't think the average high schooler who is being recruited is going to choose a school that wants to grayshirt him for his own benefit. I think he will choose the school that will give him the best shot at the field. It is hard at that age to look down the road at your future and what is going to provide you with the best long-term opportunities. I just hope there is someone he listens to that understands that.
