We talked with Dayton Chaminade-Julienne head coach Jim Place today for this week's edition of the Bucknuts Radio Hour. Place gave us some news on running back Javon Ringer, who will have had surgery two weeks ago from this Wednesday and is recovering well.
"They told him he had to stay on crutches for six weeks, so he walks around the halls here carrying his crutches," Place said. "He is way ahead on his rehabilitation."
Ringer has a goal to be playing by this summer.
"Everybody says he's not going to play in those all-star games this summer," Place said. "He says he's playing in them."
Place also said that Ringer's academics are on track.
"We feel really good that he's on track," Place said.
The big question is whether or not Ringer will wind up in a Buckeye uniform. Place said he can see Ringer playing for the Buckeyes, but we will have to wait and see what happens.
"I can, but you know what? I don't count," Place said. "But I really, really think that he can be an immediate impact player up there.
"Recruiting becomes a lot more complicated. There's some things that have happened up in Columbus that I think we all know about -- I don't want to talk about -- that have made it, just that Ohio State is taking the attitude right now that we need to move very slow on every front, so everything's okay."
There's even been some talk about Javon grayshirting at Ohio State.
"I think that's an option," Place said. "That's something that really I brought up."
Make no mistake about it though, Javon wants to get back on the field as soon as he can. Place shared an instance where Javon tried to prove he was ready.
"Let me tell you a story about Javon," Place said. "Before the first Alter game (week 10), Javon went out on the field and raced Brandon Harrison -- it was the Thursday before the game. and ran him to a dead heat with a torn ACL. He said, 'Coach, please let me play. Look what I did there, I tied him.'"
