James “not elite” Franklin (HC Penn St. Nittany Lions)

Orgeron is .684 vs Top 10 teams? Extremely hard to believe

It would be interesting to break that down further to determine how many of those wins were against 7-6 South Carolina teams (and the like) early in the year.

OK, i botched the math, he's only .667
is some of his wins propped by inflated preseason rankings? YES, not going to deny it. but 6 of his 12 wins are in December or later.

By game breakdown, his overall top 10 record in ()
Bold and red wins i think were over inflations (from memory)
Bold and green wins i think were legit (from memory)
All others i'm too last to go look up

2016 (interim year):
Loss to #1 Bama (0-1)

2017
Beat #10 Auburn (1-1)
Loss to #1 Bama (1-2

2018
Beat #8 Miami (2-2)
Beat #7 Auburn (3-2)

Loss to #1 Bama (3-3)
Beat #7 UCF (4-3)

2019
Beat #9 Texas (5-3)
Beat #7 Florida (6-3)
Beat #9 Auburn (7-3)
Beat #2 Bama (8-3)
Beat #4 UGA (9-3)
Beat #4 OU (10-3)
Beat #3 Clemson (11-3)

2020
Loss to #5 A&M (11-4)
Loss to #1 Bama (11-5)
Beat #6 Florida (12-5)

2021
Loss to #3 Bama (12-6)

you want to count 2019 Auburn as an overinflation, i won't argue.
but they started in upper teens and worked up to top 10 before our game in late October that year.
they ended with 5 losses, so they definitely don't go in legit column.

On the one hand, that’s not an “elite” record. On the other, who could PSU realistically get that would do better? Three 11 win seasons out of seven in the B1G east (throwing out 2020) doesn’t completely suck.
Good point. Add to that the difficulty in recruiting young black men to attend a university surrounded, essentially, by Deliverance, and I really don't think Franklin is a bad choice at all.

I have always seen people list it's location as a reason it will be hard for Nebraska to ever get back to being an elite program. While that may very well be true, I'm always surprised that people don't mention the same factor when they talk about PSU.

It is indeed in the middle of nowhere but not like milk and honey middle of nowhere Nebraska. It's middle of nowhere they'll-never-find-my-body-when-they-are-done-with-me, sick, twisted, Red Bud meets Deliverance hills of Pennsyltucky.

i’d be willing to bet most people don’t realize that about Ped State.

I mean having never been, i think of Pennsylvania, and think it’s up in a pretty populous part of the country and just assume most of the state is as well. Or is at least reasonable driving distance from something.

there ain’t SHIT in or anywhere even close to the whole state of Nebraska.

Yeah it's about 90 min (without weather/gameday) to Harrisburg, which isn't exactly a destination. That's your closest costco, to quantify the population density. You're in the middle of the appalachains.

3ish hours to Baltimore, Philly. A little less to Pittsburgh, little more to NYC.

Drivable but you're pretty isolated there.

...and the drives feel worse because you are up in the mountains. It just sucks.

So next time you see one of them trying to pretend they are some east coast cosmopolitan sophisticates while the rest of the B1G is all a bunch of shit kicking hayseed farmers, it's as grounded in reality as their "Success With Honor" schtick.

Philly in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, Alabama in between.

I swear my dad's Penn St fan friends used to give him shit for Ohio State being in "cow town". This was before I had visited either place, so I just assumed it was accurate.

Fast forward to where I make my first trip to a game at Penn St and literally park in a cow field.
