Jameis Winston (QB Browns)

The Buccaneers are, unfortunately, in a position wherein they may need to gamble on Winston.

Lovie could get some gray hair over this one, but he knew what he was getting into when he took the job.

Tampa might be close enough to Tallahassee (proximity and culture) to keep him out of jail too.

They're absolutely taking him. They've already come out and said that they're taking a QB with the #1 pick and that Winston has the edge right now (but that could change). Unless Mariota shows up at the combine and performs like Andrew Luck (he won't), Winston will be the pick.

If you're Mariota....are you going to show up at the combine and TRY to get drafted by Tampa Bay?

Lovie Smith just yesterday already mentioned that no charges were filed in the rape case and the rest of the stuff was just things college kids do. It's like preemptive damage control over character concerns for the guy they're going to draft.

As for Mariota, why wouldn't he try and get drafted #1? If Tampa takes Winston, and Tennessee passes on a qb, he could end up falling several picks and cost himself quite a bit of coin. He's going to get drafted by a shitty team no matter what.

There's a difference between a shitty team and a shitty franchise. A QB drafted by Tampa is going to be ruined.

100% preemptive damage control

The song remains the same in the NFL

I don't remember stealing crab legs or yelling obscenities from tables while I was in school and I did a lot of things that I vaguely remember the next morning (or someone telling me) and going, "we did WHAT last night?" Seriously, Winston could replace Rick James in Dave Chappelle's skit and you probably wouldn't know the difference. I don't get how NFL teams can be this blind. It's not even having to make the gamble, it's betting on the horse that lines up backwards to win the race.

But it is impressive that this wasn't Jameis after the Oregon game...

I'm sorry, but the notion that Mariota wouldn't want to be drafted #1 because he thinks TB is a bad franchise is ridiculous.
Then he's short sighted. You think Aaron Rogers wanted to be drafted #1? Do you think he'd be the Discount Double Check guy right now if he went to the 9ers and had to play right away vs getting to learn behind Brett Favre?
Good. Let's hope it is Famous Jameis. Fuck that guy.
Oh he's going to be ruined no matter where he goes. I'm not worried about that one bit.

by this logic, every qb should strive to be the #199 pick in the draft.

No, but every QB should strive to go to a location that will maximize/monetize his abilities. If Tampa is dumb enough to take Jameis and let Mariota fall to the Titans, more power to them. Although you make a good point about the supporting offensive cast in TB....I still don't expect that team to amount to anything.
