Jadeveon Clowney (DE Carolina Panthers)

ESPN was talking about what a beast Clowney was for repping 21 times on the bench  Among 50 DL guys at the combine, only 13 had lower reps than Clowney. Granted, Clowney has longer arms which makes the bench more difficult, and his 40 time is insane for DL, just thought ESPN's comment was funny. Miami's punter also had more reps.

It's hilarious that something so important to the future of a franchise like making a sound first round draft pick is still being done with an archaic system of useless information collected during a media circus. Laser timed 40 yard dashes should have been implemented 20 years ago. The NFL combine also should have ditched the bench press in favor of the power ball toss as Nike has done with their SPARQ system at least 10 years ago. The bench press is not a transferable skill for any NFL position. If you need to bench press 225 during a football play, it's safe to say you're no longer involved in the play. As you've noted, it's a measurement that emphasizes the wrong muscle groups and does not fairly accommodate an athletes' build.

Perhaps the only thing worse than the NFL putting such an emphasis on it is that NBA personnel do it too. Remember when people flipped out that Kevin Durant couldn't do one rep of 185?

While I agree with this entirely - I still laughed pretty hard at Durant not being able to bench 185.

Wonder if that GM for the Texans is rethinking that whole hardball approach he took with any teams that we're looking to trade up to #1 to get Clowney.

Agreed. The sad thing is that they really didn't need him. They should have traded that pick for more/future picks. I would only use the #1 overall pick on a franchise QB or maybe Left Tackle. I'm no GM though so what the fuck do I know.
