Clowney might be at USC Saturday

By Phil Kornblut
DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6 240) of South Pointe is considering attending USC's junior day this weekend. He talked with Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier last week. "He just said to get my grades right and come see them on junior day," Clowney said. He also talked last week with USC recruiter Ellis Johnson, Alabama head coach Nick Saban, Clemson recruiter Jeff Scott and his recruiter from Alabama. All of those programs have offered along with Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, UCLA, Miami, Tennessee and about 15 more schools. Clowney said the strongest pushes right now are coming from USC, Clemson, Florida and Alabama. He's not claiming a favorite. "Everybody is the same," he said. Clowney had 144 tackles with 23 sacks and 29 quarterback pressures.

Clowney not planning any visits for a while
February 23, 2010
By Phil Kornblut

South Pointe DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6 240) attended USC's junior day last Saturday, and that will be his last football recruiting related visit for sometime. "I'm not going anywhere else right now," Clowney said. "The visit went well. I talked to a couple of the coaches. I talked to coach Johnson and coach Lawing for about 15 minutes. I saw the new facilities they have for the athletes." Downey said he's not picked up any new offers recently to add to the 25 he's sitting on. He said USC and Clemson are, of course, on his list. Outside of the state, he said he likes Alabama, LSU and UCLA right now. As for visiting Clemson, Clowney said that probably wouldn't happen until his senior season. He plans to make all five of his official visits before deciding. Clowney said there is no favorite with him right now.

Five combine-ready high school football players
Though the NFL Scouting Combine is still years away, these prep athletes could make a splash right now.

...
Jadeveon Clowney, DE , South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.), class of 2011.

While NFL scouts are buzzing about Carlos Dunlap for the 2010 NFL Draft, they are likely to fall in love with Jadeveon Clowney at a future combine.

Clowney is terrorizing high school quarterbacks in the Palmetto State just like the current Florida Gators defensive end once did. His 6-6, 235-pound frame is not far from Dunlap's current 6-6, 240-pound build. With another year of high school left, and several years of college football remaining, Clowney could be a Dunlap clone before long.

As a junior, Clowney compiled 144 tackles and a whopping 23 sacks. He also blocked four passes and caused three fumbles.

"He's a monster," said Barry Byers, assistant sports editor at The Herald. "I wrote a story early in the season and compared the way he plays with the way Julius Peppers did at UNC and early in his NFL career."

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (Rock Hill, S.C./South Pointe) was a guest on ESPNU's Recruiting Insider last week and mentioned six programs: South Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Alabama, LSU and UCLA. The Gators, Gamecocks and Clemson Tigers are the three who are strongest at this point. Clowney has already been named to the 2011 Under Armour All-American game. ?

Who's in it for Elite DE Clowney?
March 3, 2010
Jamie Newberg

I know it's real early in the recruiting process, but what is your feel on Jadeveon Clowney? Who will it come down to and where might he rank in the Rivals100 list?

- Abney from Greenwood, S.C.

This kid is a big-time prospect. Clowney, from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, S.C., will be one of the most sought-after prospects in the land regardless of position. In fact, you could make a strong case that Clowney is the top prospect in the nation.

At 6 feet 6 and 240 pounds, this defensive end looks terrific on film. He showcases exceptional quickness off the ball, speed around the edge and a great awareness at the line of scrimmage. For a lineman he certainly shows the quick ability to dissect a play and then go after the ball. Clowney looks strong, uses his hands well and has some big-time moves for such a young player. I also like the fact that he doesn't give up on a play. When the play flows away from him, Clowney gives backside pursuit.

Overall, Clowney looks like a tremendous pass rusher and shows the ability to stop the run.

His coach, Bobby Carroll, has coached high school football for 27 years and told me earlier this week that Clowney is the best player he's ever had. Carroll has coached five players who went on to the NFL, including three first-round picks (Ben Watson, Jonathan Joseph and Jeff Burris). Carroll also coached Stephon Gilmore (South Carolina CB) from the 2009 class.

Clowney has scholarship offers from every school in the SEC and ACC as well as USC, Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, Oregon, UCLA, Texas Tech and others. He also runs the 100, 200 and 400 meters in track.

Where will Clowney go? It's hard to say at this point because he could practically name his school. Of course, it will be tough to get him out of the state as South Carolina. Clemson will have a great shot at landing him. But if he leaves the state, watch out for Alabama, LSU, Florida, North Carolina and some others.

Jadeveon Clowney of Rock Hill, a 6-6, 240-pounder, is the best defensive end in the nation and a top five candidate nationally. He has been timed in 4.48 seconds for 40 yards and recorded 26 sacks last season. Anyone who thinks they have a chance to sign him has offered a scholarship, including USC, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan.
