Clowney cites Rumph as reason for Clemson visit

By Phil Kornblut
DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6 240) of South Pointe surprised no one when he walked away with the Mr. Football Award Friday night. But he did have some surprising news about his recruiting, and that was plans for an official visit to Clemson January 21st. Up till Friday night, the Tigers weren't thought to be major players for Clowney. Clowney said his friendship with recruiter Chris Rumph led to his decision to set the visit. ?Yea, coach Rumph came in the other day and said man I need to get a visit out of you,? Clowney said Friday night. ?I said yea, I?m going to give you one coach ?cause you?re a cool dude. So, I?m going to go ahead and take one to Clemson.? Clowney has taken an official visit to USC. He is scheduled to visit Florida State January 7th and Alabama January 14th. USC's Steve Spurrier and Alabama's Nick Saban have had their in home visits with Clowney. Clowney said he does not have a favorite and will go to Signing Day before making his decision.

The article emphasizes how much he dislikes the cold weather during Shrine Bowl practice.

Oh joy, twenty more years of internet recruiting wonks worrying about official visits during winter has just been sprung on us.

Cold weather and no game day atmosphere!? no wonder Tressel can't close!!1!

Presenting the "Lemmies" - Football's Second Season :sick1::sick1::sick1:

By Second Season on December 12, 2010 9:50 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

It is time to award my annual Tom Lemming awards, better known as the "Lemmies," to the leading college coaches/recruiters and high school players in the nation for the 2010 season. Most significantly, two awards go to people with Chicago area ties.

Continued...
The "Defensive Player of the Year" in high school football is defensive end Jadeveon Clowney of Rock Hill, S.C., a 6-6, 240-pounder with 4.6 speed who had 26 sacks this season. I rated him No. 2 in my preseason top 100 list but he will move to No. 1 in my postseason list ahead of Florida State-bound running back/linebacker James Wilder of Tampa, Fla., because of his superior production.

Clowney reminds me of Mario Williams, the No. 1 draft choice in the NFL three years ago. He has natural pass-rushing skills not often seen in an athlete of his size. Uncommitted, he is expected to choose South Carolina or Alabama.

Interesting note: A year ago, Clowney's team was beaten by Everett Colson's team in the semifinals of the state playoff in South Carolina. Colson, a 5-11, 170-pound quarterback from Myrtle Beach, is Notre Dame's latest recruit and I predict he will be a star in South Bend, the next Tony Rice. He has good running skills and a cannon for an arm. He passed for 3,500 yards last season. He will be a top 100 player in my postseason list.
That's my boy...always putting an Irish spin on things...

Free Rivals - Linebackers become team leaders

Ohio State isn't giving up on the nation's No. 1 player, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. While Clowney didn't list the Buckeyes in his top five (South Carolina, Alabama, FSU, LSU and Clemson), sources say that coaches from OSU will make the long trip down to Rock Hill, S.C., to meet with South Pointe head coach Bobby Carroll. However, it is unclear whether those same coaches will be able to do an in-home visit with Clowney. Based on the big defensive end's reaction to the bitter cold on Monday morning, it's hard to picture him playing his college ball in Columbus.

Just speculating here... but they not be going to meet with him for Clowney. South Pointe has turned out a TON of D1 talent lately, and the staff may be trying to get their foot in the door for future players.

And I'm about 30-45 minutes from where Clowney lives... and it was in the 20s yesterday. Tuscaloosa was 17 yesterday.

the similarity is that you do things to prepare you for your next level if you want to increase your chances of success

you will have to play playoffs in the cold... which is why it is not a coincidence that it's somewhat rare that a warm-climate team makes it to the Super Bowl

My understanding is South Pointe has a couple of junior DB/WRs that OSU might be interested in...

I tnink this might be the positive of having a player of this level on your team. Think of it as a smaller version of what Glenville does every year as far as promoting lesser known players. Having a Clowney on your team must be a dream to coach but a nightmare to be the media ring master of when dealing with everything else off the field. I coached for three years at a small school in Southern Ohio and was able to talk with T. Pryor's Head Coach at a clinic shortly before he made his destination public. It was easy to see he cared for him and wanted him in a good place but also that it was clearly a media bomb he was unable to control.

SC notebook: Clowney leaves Shrine Bowl practice with 'stinger'

By KEVIN MELTON
[email protected]

Published: Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 5:35 p.m.

South Pointe defensive end Jadeveon Clowney left Wednesday's afternoon Shrine Bowl practice at Spartanburg High School with what South Carolina coach Mickey Moss is calling a ?shoulder stinger.?

Moss said Clowney suffered the injury on Monday and has been bothered by it throughout the week.

?He wants to play (on Saturday), and we're monitoring him very closely,? Moss said. ?Hopefully tomorrow he'll get cleared and be ready to play.?
Moss said should Clowney be cleared, he would be limited as to his participation in the remaining practices and would face ?little contact.?
Clowney is considered one of the nation's top recruits. The 6-foot-6, 255-pounder was named the state's Mr. Football last Friday.

He has narrowed his final three choices to Alabama, LSU and South Carolina.
