Jack Nicklaus (Official Thread)

I just watched Jack Nicklaus tee off at the British Open in what probably will be his last competitive round. I'm hoping he shoots a 67 and plays the entire tournament, but that is inconsequential in my mind. What a class act!

I can only think of two words...

True Buckeye!

i'm happy to see Jack "hang it up" on the course that he loves, but i'm very sad to see him go.

he probably wont get low enough today to make the cut, but i would bet on a birdie at 18, and probably the loudest cheers St Andrews has ever heard.

He is playing a fantastic round for his age, but it will not be enough to make it. Was on the edge of the 14th (630 yards) in two shots and then missed the six footer for a birdie. Really took the wind out of his sails. Still on even par, hoping he can at least break par. Really getting ovations everywhere now on course.

Nice bet. Jack birdied 18 to finish at even par 72 today. He crushed his last drive, putted his second shot onto the green, and then sank a 13-footer. His +3 total will miss the cut, which will probably be even par.

He spent a lot of time on the little bridge at 18, posing for pictures with his son (caddying), and playing partners Luke Donald and Tom Watson.

The crowd loved it all. They got their money's worth (5-pound notes with Jack's picture on them).

Great way to go out - with a birdie.

I'm glad he got to play with Watson also. I have a feeling he may play in the Masters again, and I'm almost certain he will play in the Memorial again. As long as his body holds up well enough to play respectably.

I remember playing in the Ohio Junior on the Scarlet course, and Jackie Nicklaus was in the group behind mine. Jack followed him around, and man I was nervous as hell every time they caught up with us and there was the slightest chance that Jack was watching. I felt sorry for the other guys in Jackie's group, other than they probably got to talk to him after the round.

He has said that the only thing in his career he regrets (other than maybe a couple of putts in '72 and '82) was not ever going back to finish his degree at tOSU. He really loves Ohio and tOSU. Needless to say, we love him right back.

Once again I am old enough to have a little differnt perspective than many on this board. I was a kid when Jack and Arnie used to go head to head. Watching Jack play AND WIN was something my Dad and I did in front of an old black and white tv. I'm not talking about pulling a Masters out of his ass, I'm talking about winning regularly.

Man could he make shots. He could start a charge and just keep coming. It was unlike anything Tiger does. Tiger goes out and grabs the lead and kicks your ass. Tiger comes from behind sometimes, but he doesn't come from nowhere and leave you wondering what happened. Jack did that. It was a level of excitement you just don't see often these days. It was sweet - especially when you were from Columbus and he was your guy.

Even today when he is 'past his prime' I watched him play 18 in a way I can only wish to play a single hole some day.

Watching him stop on that bridge and pose for the photographers brought tears to my eyes.

Time for some Geritol and a nap now (for me, not Jack).

The stats that always stuck out about him was his number of Tour Wins... but look at the 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Just goes to show you that he was always in a position to win.

I think the "Golf-Gods" took care of Jack quite nicely on #18 yesterday. Jack could have pulled a "Ty Webb," taken off his shoes and socks-rolled his pantlegs up to his knees and run around his ball on the green saying "na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na" and hit the ball with any part of his putter and that ball would have gone in. What a way to finish his career at his favorite golf course in the world.
