Jack's grandson dies in hottub

Grandson of Golfer Jack Nicklaus Dies

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

(03-01) 19:37 PST NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) --

The 17-month-old grandson of Jack Nicklaus died Tuesday after falling into a hot tub where he had been playing earlier, officials said.

Jake Walter Nicklaus was pronounced dead at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center at about 6:30 p.m., said Palm Beach County sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller.

The son of Steve Nicklaus, the toddler had been playing in the hot tub with his 4-year-old brother and their nanny, Miller said. The three left the pool area and went into the house, but Jake slipped away and went back through a sliding door to the hot tub, Miller said.

The nanny quickly realized he was missing and discovered him in the water, Miller said. She performed CPR until fire-rescue workers arrived. The boy was breathing at the time, he said.

He was brought to the hospital and died about an hour and a half after rescuers were called, Miller said.

According to the preliminary investigation, the death appeared to be accidental and there was no reason to suspect foul play, Miller said. An autopsy was planned to confirm the cause of death.

He said there was a child barrier around the entire pool area.

A winner of 18 majors and five-time winner of the PGA Player of the Year, Nicklaus most recent action was on Feb. 5 when he returned from a long layoff following back surgery to win the Champions Skins Game.

He is due to serve as captain of the U.S. team in the Presidents Cup competition this fall.

Steve has collaborated with his father on several golf course designs.

Condolences to the entire Nicklaus family. How terrible!

Let's make something positive come out of this.

Circulate this story to friends you have who own pools, hot tubs, decorative ponds and the like. A small child needs only a few inches of water to drown. Always set barriers up to keep small children out of water areas. If you don't know CPR, then visit your local firestation and ask for some training.

Nice post. I'm always amazed how many people who have small children have pools/hot tubs. Wouldn't you go nuts with worry?

Just read that article somewhere else. It's so sad to read something like that happening to anyone but when it happens to a young child it just seems to intensify everything. Really sad. My condolences to the Nicklaus family.

Unfortunately, according to the story there were child barriers and the nanny performed CPR, yet the child died anyway. Maybe the best thing to do would be to wait until your children are a little older before putting in a pool. Is that such a sacrifice to make to safeguard your children?

RIP, little guy.

Jack Nicklaus (Official Thread)

Anyone know where I can download some footage of Jack Nicklaus? I need it for a project I'm working on about his retirement so it can be old or new clips. The higher the quality the better :)

any help is appreciated.

I tried google and didn't have much luck. There are some clips on the PGA site but it's only for streaming and not for download. I may have to try and get some stock footage from a local TV station but I figured I see what I could get off the net first.

There are software tools (both free and pay) that will capture streaming video into a saveable format (.mpg, .wmv, etc.). Use Google to find them...

Thanks, I'll have to search check them out... I have softaware that will capture streaming audio that I use from time to time. The only problem is that my computer I can only get it to give me streaming audio/video every now and then and I can't solve the problem. I have a new system coming any day now so hopefully I'll be able to do it then.

If your new computer supports streaming video with no problems, you'll be able to capture streaming video with no problem. I'll try to remember to check my home computer for which free program I used to capture some streaming video...it was a "try before buy" trial version which was good for 10 days, but when I did use it it worked very well. That definitely should be enough for you to get the clips you need for your project.
