Jack Nicklaus says he underachieved, everybody laughs

Hold your giggles here, I think Jack Nicklaus (sort of) has a point.

Nicklaus said in his 90-minute presser at the Memorial on Wednesday that he never really though he reached the pinnacle of golf. Really, that's a thing he said.

"I think I underachieved all my life. I think that's why I got better," said Nicklaus.

"I still don't think I achieved what I could have achieved in my career. But my career was a good career. I certainly wouldn't trade it," he said. "I've got five kids, I've got 22 grandkids … and I've got a great relationship with all of them. I wouldn't trade that for the world. I wouldn't trade any championship for any of that. That to me is far more important.

"Could my record have been better? Yeah. But my family would not be what I think we enjoy today."

Gary Player once noted in the past the importance of a balanced life for an all-time great in these comments to Rory McIlroy. It's something Nicklaus always tried to emulate as well.

It's tough to reconcile that life with the 18 majors Nicklaus won or the 19 runners up. You can't really say anyone with his stats underachieved, but I see his point.

When Tiger was still winning tournaments and the media couldn't wait to jump on his bandwagon, to crown him as the "Greatest Golfer of All-time!" Jack said nothing. Tiger looked like a shoe in to best Jack's 18 majors, but no one bothered to look at the number of times Jack finished second (19) compared to Tiger's 6. Jack's consistent play separates him from Tiger and the young pups like McIlroy and Speith.

There seems to be idea floating around that, if one is a fan of Tiger Woods, one cannot equally be a fan of Jack Nicklaus. Nothing is further from the truth.

I think Jack was, all-in-all, the greatest of all time. And a real class act. And most importantly, a great BUCKEYE!

One could argue parity in golf is much better now than it was back in Jack's day but then again... Jack was hitting with clubs that had a sweet spot about the size of a dime or smaller.... nowadays the sweet spot of a club is atleast a half dollar size....
