JabriLLL "Ghost" Peppers (New England Patriots)

You'll love this one. The Detroit Free Press (how could they charge for that?) lists all of the TSUN Heisman candidates, right down to twelfth place finishes.

The hilarity of delusion begins with the opening sentence:

"Jabrill Peppers' impressive regular season got an official stamp tonight as he finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting."

Apparently, the committee had a range of opinions, but reached consensus about him, thus leaving him with a cornucopia of rubber stamps as a memento.

The biggest disqualification of Peppers as the Big Ten’s top defender, though, has to be his performances in big games. Just look at his production–more like lack thereof–in Michigan’s tilts vs. Penn State, vs. Wisconsin, at Iowa and at Ohio State:

  • 20 total tackles
  • 0 TFL
  • 0 sacks
  • 1 interception
  • 0 passes broken up
  • 0 forced fumbles
  • 0 fumble recoveries
  • 0 defensive TDs
Those are cumulative totals from those four games.

New York. Heisman Finalist. Proof positive of the power of hype over substance.

Building on that, here are his offensive and return stats for those four games:

Rushing
PSU 0 rushes
Iowa 4 rushes, 11 yards (7 long)
Wisc 0 rushes
OSU 4 rushes, 4 yards (6 long)

Receiving
PSU 0 receptions
Iowa 0 receptions
Wisc 0 receptions
OSU 0 receptions

Punt Returns
PSU 2, 54 yards (53 long)
Iowa 1, 19 yards
Wisc 2, 19 yards (13 long)
OSU 1, 5 yards

KO Returns
PSU 0 returns
Iowa 1, 16 yards
Wisc 1, 14 yards
OSU 1, 44 yards

So, along with being a virtual non-factor on defense, he was an absolute non-factor on offense with eight total touches for a grand total of 15 yards (1.9 yards per touch), or two touches for under four yards per game. He was decent on returns (six punts for 97 yards and a 16.2 average, and three kickoffs for 74 yards and a 24.7 average), but both categories were skewed by a single long return.
