The NCAA has guidelines on the % of a season that a student/athlete is required to miss after repaying any impermissible benefits received.
<$100 = 0 games
between $100 and $300 = 10% of a season (1 game in football)
between $300 and $500 = 20% of a season (2 games in football)
between Ohio State and Buckeyes = we'll let you know what your punishment will be. Until then, sit back and suck it.
greater than $500 = 30% of a season (4 games in football)
The length of the suspensions can be reduced if a hardship is involved.
That's why Troy got 2 games for $500. A hardship for Marcell Dareus (the hardship despite the fact that he went to Miami twice, when he's from Birmingham) is why he also got two games for $1787 in impermissible benefits.
