Izzo meets with the Cavs to discuss job offer.

So that's pretty much Phil Jackson, Greg Poppavich or Larry Brown, right? Is there anyone else that you would consider a proven winner?

Someone that has been consistently good in the NBA and no one coming directly from the college game. I would love for Izzo to show me I'm full of shit but, like I said, it's a pretty big gamble with LeBron looking around and Cleveland desperate for a Championship. The Cavs are our only shot for the time being - it's no time for experimenting.

hmmmmmmmmmm.. maybe...

IZZO:
work 5 more years and make $30M (probably can retire if I wanted to)
coach the best hoops player in the world
rest of the roster is pretty good too
team already is defense focused
team has won more games in last 2 yrs than any other.. so it's not like taking on the Nets
ain't no platform higher than the NBA

owner has demonstrated he's willing to go to any length to make a winner

I can do this

ME: If I can't have Jackson... I want Izzo

Damn, what has Izzo been smoking? Why would he even think about leaving MSU?
I think everyone has their price and $30 mil is probably pretty close to Izzo's and there probably aren't many, if any, other owners out there who would pay that much for a coach. Also, Izzo has reached most of the milestones of a college HC and will probably always be considered a great college coach. If he turns down this offer, I highly doubt that someone will come calling with this much money in the future and what else has he to do at Michigan State.

Plus, no one knows what else Gilbert might have offered him

Yeah, but how much money do you really need? If he leaves I would put it as one of the most "stupid college head coach decision to leave to the pros". Right up there with Steve Spurrier leaving Florida, etc.

If he stays at MSU and he becomes one of the "all time great college coaches", right up there with the legends; Wooden, Knight, Smith, Rupp, and Krzyzewski, etc.

Another article: Tom Izzo?s future with Michigan State could depend on what a 25-year-old NBA superstar does with his own. That?s the impression former Spartans coach Jud Heathcote got when his prized pupil called him Monday night for a 30-minute phone conversation at his home in Spokane, Wash. Heathcote confirmed Tuesday that Izzo discussed the idea of coaching Cavaliers standout LeBron James. And much of the discussion, according to Heathcote, centered around whether or not James would remain a Cavalier if Izzo decides to take the job. James enters free agency July 1 and expects to have numerous suitors, including Cleveland, New York, New Jersey and Chicago. ?I honestly think he?ll look at this,? Heathcote said. ?But unless he can get some commitment from LeBron James, the job isn?t that good. I think a lot hinges on what (Izzo) feels about LeBron?s future. I think he?s seriously considering it. He?s going to look at it like he does on all things but he?s got an awfully good situation at Michigan State, too.? ? Detroit News

Your program is so deep in the hole Izzo leaving will probably not even help you recruiting with players from the state of Michigan. You do know that they can replace him.

You don't replace arguably the best college basketball coach in the country and not have some sort of dropoff. Im not saying we are going to have a better program than MSU going forward because we most likely won't, but if there ever was a time to somewhat close the gap this would be it assuming Izzo does leave.

Eh, UM should focus on not being the Big Ten doormat in men's basketball before they concern themselves with thinking they're going to close the gap on the conference's top dog.

If Izzo or Jackson don't grab this... Cavs could get exhawg for $150K a year...

If Gilbert is passing out large sums of money I'll gladly take on a consulting role for the $150K. I'll watch every game on TV and text one of the assistant coaches what I think they should do.
At least with Izzo he has an established history of making good decisions and doing the most with the talent that he has much like Coach K does at Duke. I think either of them would be good NBA coaches rather than a guy like Cal that pulls in the most talent every year, but never wins it all. Hopefully Lebron sees it that way rather than a career assistant that puts a few extra dollars in Worldwide Wes' pocket.
