Is JT's NC Window Closing?

...if Donnyjr had posted the same topic, you all would have roasted him. the end.

LJB has been roasted for this. Are you suggesting that he hasn't been, or are you upset that not everyone is roasting him? It's hard to tell.

As for the statistical trend that comprises LJB's original observation; I don't consider it to be anything more than a curiosity and don't for a moment believe that it implies anything about JT's future NC chances. Having said that, comparing his original post to donnyjr is less than fair on a number of fronts.
  1. Donnyjr never posted an original observation of a statistical trend.
  2. Donnyjr never made a case of any kind in a cogent, coherent manner.
  3. Donnyjr never made one post that made me think, unless you consider "cheese makes my poop hard"... But that only made me wonder what kind of drugs he was on.
It's fine that you think the trend that was shown has no bearing on JT. I agree with you on that. But the trend itself is sufficiently interesting that it was a worthy contribution. Likening it to donnyjr is the only thing I've seen in this thread that actually sinks to the donnyjr level.

Maybe, but do the 1991 Penguins beat the 1991 Hurricanes or Huskies?

I mean, I coached an rec. league undefeated Championship kid pitch girls softball team... does that mean I should stake a claim to some 8U competitive league title?

That depends. Were you voted to the championship, or did you win a playoff to get there?

You can't be serious. Really.

Well, sure, I'm serious. Our team won the 8U Rec League. We beat everyone we played. 13-0. I'm proud of our accomplishments. We won a "real" championship, and the girls all got trophies and ice cream and we had a team party and all that. But... we didn't win a 8U competitive league. In fact, if we had played the competitive league champs, we probably would have been handed our asses. Why? Because the leagues are different. The level of play in a comp league is just simply better than the rec league. Just like D-IAA and D-IA, which was my point. That's not to take anything away from Tress' D-IAA performance. It's very, very good. But, his 5 D-IAA titles are not D-IA titles. It's not easier or harder to win a D-IAA title. It's not "less worthy." It's just not a D-IA Title. That's all.

Not entirely.

Maybe I'm captain obvious here, but the real question is 'can it translate to the next level?'

For some coaches, and schemes, it absolutely can. Just because you couldn't coach Manchester United doesn't mean there may not be another coach in your situation that couldn't make the transition. For every few dozen crappy Div 1-AA coaches and players, there are nuggets. Jim Tressel, Brian Kelly (D2, I know), Jerry Rice, ect.

Oh, and for those asking if 1991 Penguins are better than Miami. I think we know the answer to that one. Given a similar squad, the Vest would have beaten Miami. After all, he did it 11 years later when given the chance.

I don't disagree, I was speaking in strict terms of LJB not including Tressel's D-IAA titles in his post.

Yeah, sure... again, I don't disagree, but the point of my post wasn't to suggest that Tressel's in over his head or some such silliness. It was made in the strict confines of the original post in the thread.

"Given a similar squad?" What do you mean by that? The specific question is could 1991 YSU beat 1991 Miami or 1991 Washington. The squad in question is specifically 1991 YSU - not Tressel with comparable players (a la 2002). Again, it's silly for anyone to argue Tressel can't get it done at the D-IA level. He can, and he has. What's at issue is whether or not LJB had a decent enough reason to not include his D-IAA titles when he made his post.

ok, every player signed by jt who played their 4 years has competed for a nc at the d1a level. i understand ljb's post and view it as a very interesting factoid. but imo its just that. its simply something that hasn't been done. i don't see it as having any real impact over whether or not tOSU wins another nc.

for example, no freshman qb had ever won the game.... until it happened.

Looks like JT's window is now closed, and the eight-year rule is still in effect.

Looks like Mack Brown is currently on the hot seat, with Les Miles waiting on deck.

Funny that you posted here. I thought about posting in this thread a few months back, but thought maybe too soon/open wound for some.

Wise move, letting me take the bullet. But I've already taken a lot in this thread, so I'm okay with that. :wink2:
