iPhone/iPad App Recommendations & Reviews

How much do you want to spend? Navigon has an app for iphones. I've never used it, but my parents a have GPS from Navigon. The full app costs $50, but you can get maps for different parts of the country (East, Central, West) for $30. I really like the reality view pro feature Navigons have.

NAVIGON MobileNavigator | NAVIGON. And the world is yours

As little as possible - but if I have to spend a higher price to get something decent I will. I did see Navigon as well as TomTom, so they were also under consideration. I'd want national maps and turn-by-turn voice for whatever I get. I'm actually going out of town after Memorial Day so I'm hoping to have something figured out by then.

EDIT: I just saw that the regional Navigon can be upgraded from the regional version to the US/CAN version at any time. Hmmm...

Are you jailbroken? There is a series of Apps/utilities you can download to get one for free. xGPS if I remember correctly. You need to download the utilities to allow it to work though.

Not jailbroken. Actually, I just got my first iPhone yesterday. I can't say I was considering jailbreaking either.

For the golfers out there I highly recommend getting GolfShot. It is a GPS app for your phone. My first round of the year I played with two guys who used it and swore by it, so I decided to pick it up. I played Harborside yesterday and it worked like a charm. It gives distances to all bunkers, carry distances and then to the front, center and back of each green. I think it was 24.99.

I was trying to decide between that one and AirVue. AirVue is only $9.99 and has pretty good reviews too, but I think GolfShot is rated slightly higher. How was your battery life using GolfShot? I like the idea of being able keep stats on my game and my success rate with various clubs/shots too.

I had no issues with battery. I made sure I turned the screen off after I got my info and my phone was fully charged before I started the round. Like you mentioned it keeps all your stats which is good for people who like to go more in depth. I believe you can also DL your stats into an excel sheet, but I have not done that.

After spending most of the day reviewing this stuff, I'm going to start out trying Co-Pilot for GPS navigation. Here are my reasons:

  • Has favorable reviews similar to TomTom and Navigon (I searched for reviews from CNET, etc. I get the feeling that the reviews in the App Store are mostly full of shit.)
  • Full-featured 30 day FREE TRIAL (Co-Pilot Live Directions)
  • Price (Reg. price $29.99 for North America) TomTom & Navigon are $50-$80 for their full North America app. No subscription is required. For the same price, Navigon only gives you 1/3 of the US.
  • SALE PRICE: Co-Pilot Live North America is on sale for $19.99 thru Memorial Day, so I have a week to give it a try and buy it for the sale price before my trip.
  • Maps: Co-Pilot (and TomTom) include AK & HI in their North American maps. Navigon does not. This is a key feature for me since I'll be spending two weeks in Hawaii in Sept./Oct.
I'll be sure to update when I have a verdict on this app.

I think I'm going to go ahead with Golfshot GPS over AirVue. Golfshot looks like it's a better value even at a higher price, and the reviews seem to bear this out. These two sources have pretty good comparisons:

Intro to iPhone Golf Applications | Critical Golf

iPhone App Review: Golfshot: Golf GPS vs AirVue Golf | The Virtuous Republic

Also, I've read that on either of those apps you can play 18 holes on a full charge, but I'm worried about battery life nonetheless. I've seen for myself what happens when you use GPS for anything significant.

Fortunately, Newegg has a pretty good deal on an external battery pack:

Newegg.com - Energizer - Protective Case w/ Built-in Battery for iPhone (AP1500)

Everywhere I've looked has been selling these for $60-$80, and through Newegg it's $25 w/ free shipping. According to CNET and other reviews, it delivers on its promise of double battery life. I can keep this charged up, throw it in my golf bag and not worry about killing my battery playing a round. Also, its sleeve design makes it less cumbersome than some of the tethered batteries or dongles I've seen out there.

I have an external battery for my 3G and use it while traveling and expect heavy navigation. Good call. Like mine a lot. I did pay $80 or so for mine over a year ago. Icase I think? It's a nice piece of equipment.

Ratebeer's app is out, and I've got to say I'm somewhat disappointed. First of all, it's $1.99, but for me it's a must-have nonetheless. The two big disappointments I have with it: (1) you can't simply sign in to your Ratebeer account and have access to all your previous online reviews, wish lists, etc.; (2) many of the features actually do nothing more than launch Ratebeer.com through Safari. I could have done that myself without the fucking app. Hopefully they'll make improvements.

Also recently added Dragondictation, which is good for composing emails and long text messages, especially while you're driving (:paranoid:).

Have you seen TapLister for the iPhone? I wonder how that works out.

Haven't heard of it. When I search "taplister" in my app store, I get something called Beer Signal. From the description, it sounds like it merely uses existing social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to allow users to invite friends to pubs they're drinking at, and it's only supported by a number of cities, mostly in and around Portland and Seattle. Reading through the reviews, it sounds like it also provides realtime updates to tap lists at participating bars. Is that correct?

I've had the chance to try out CoPilot this week and I'm mostly happy with it. Here are my thoughts so far:

Pro:

  • Easy to use, easy to read. Includes a wide variety of viewing options (landscape, portait, day, night, high contrast, 2D, 3D, etc.)
  • Highly responsive when recalculating routes. Other GPSs I've used in the past (phone-based and standalone) have been slow or have nagged me to death telling me to pull a U-turn before finally recalculating the route. CoPilot quietly and swiftly goes about it's business and makes the necessary adjustments.
  • Has a "Connect to Facebook" feature that I haven't used yet, but looks kinda cool. It looks like a way to quickly post your location (City, State) to your Facebook status. Could work be useful to keep loved ones posted on my progress on long trips.
  • Integrated iPod controls, weather.
Con:

  • Seems to be strong on POIs, but not so much for residential addresses. I'll use it far more for the former, but I want something that's capable with the latter for the occasions when I do need it. It places my home address at the opposite end of my block, 0.2 miles away from its actual location. When I try to navigate to my mother's house the street or address are not even available. I know how to get there obviously, so that's not really an issue - but will it be able to get me to the right place when I'm not sure where I'm going? I'm encouraged by their MapSure service, and the reviews in iTunes says that CoPilot is highly responsive to feedback, and corrections are usually included in the next update, within 45 days. I've already provided feedback for those two issues, and I hope they show some improvement in this area in future updates.
All in all, I think CoPilot is going to be the best solution the App Store has to offer. Every GPS unit or program is going to have its flaws - even more so when you're using an application on a cell phone versus a dedicated unit. I think CoPilot is the best value out there right now and seems to show potential for continued improvement.

Gameloft is getting in on the act with some 99-cent games:

iPhone game sale part 2: Gameloft titles for 99 cents | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews

Not to be outdone, developer Gameloft just fired back with a 99-cent sale on seven of its top titles--all of which usually sell for $4.99. Here's the list:
