Don't quite understand why Hodges was designated for assignment.

There's no link there, but, presuming they added someone to the 40 man, and Hodges was the guy they moved off of it?

Or is it a why Hodges and not someone else type question?

interesting

Cleveland Indians promote Josh Tomlin, while Michael Brantley and Wes Hodges make room | cleveland.com

Hodges, the Indians second round pick in 2006, had a great spring with the big league club in Goodyear, Ariz. He had a good start at Columbus this year, but was hitting .269 (96-for-357) with nine homers and 46 RBI.

Edit: better insight

I really question the Indians’ judgment here. Hodges was nothing special. He’s 25, had a .739 OPS in Columbus with 9 home runs. But he was a second round pick in 2006, so it’s another draft failure for the Tribe. But I’m not upset over the decision to DFA Hodges. He didn’t have anywhere to play and he is nothing special. But there’s the fact that the Indians didn’t have to DFA anyone if they didn’t want to do so. Carlos Carrasco, David Huff, and Jeanmar Gomez are all on the 40-man roster and would have only required a player being sent down.
Instead, the Indians lose a player, giving up on yet another early draft pick. I hate just giving away players like this when there’s really no point in doing so. Tomlin had a nice WHIP at AAA (1.081) but is giving him a sacrificial lamb start against the Yankees really worth losing a player over?
So rest easy, Andy Marte, you have a job in the big leagues for at least one more day. Let the Marte Par-tay continue!

The Tribe is cleaning house; moving out the failed draft picks to make room for the, hopefully, more talented kids coming up behind them. Dumping Hodges is no loss...it's not like he had any trade value and there's just no way he ever makes it to a Tribe game without a ticket.

7 IP 3 H 1 R 2 K 0 BB and the W for Tomlin, not bad for a "sacrificial lamb"

I say bring Gomez up and put him in the rotation along with Tomlin and put Masterson in the bullpen and let's start all over. If these guys are for real. I see no reason to trade Westbrook unless someone blows us away with an offer. Westbrook, Carmona, Tomlin, Gomez, and one more starter for next season and we could be competitive in the Central. That's only if the two young guys are for real.
