Well, in fairness, Branyan doesn't quite strike out enough to be our #5 hitter

ANDY MARTE!!!
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Indians, according to the Chicago White Sox, have claimed infielder Jayson Nix off waivers. Nix was designated for assignment by the White Sox last week.
The White Sox made the announcement via twitter.
The Indians are expected to announce the move after the game. They must also create space for left-hander Aaron Laffey, who will start the Friday night against Cincinnati. So there could be at least two moves made later today.
Nix was hitting .163 (8-for-49) with one homer and five RBI with Chicago. Last season he hit .224 (57-for-255) with 12 homers, 32 RBI and 10 steals in 12 attempts with the White Sox. He spent part of the 2008 season Colorado.
He appeared in 16 games at third base, three at second, two at short and one in the outfield for Chicago this year. Nix, 27, was Colorado's first pick in the 2001 draft. he was the 44th player taken.
He bats right and throws right.
Today the Cleveland Indians announced they have claimed infielder Jayson Nix off outright waivers and have added him to the Major League roster. The Indians also optioned right-handed pitcher Jensen Lewis and infielder Luis Valbuena to AAA Columbus. To allow room on the 40-man roster for Nix, the Indians have designated right-handed pitcher Shane Lindsay for assignment.
Nix, 27, was recently designated for assignment by the White Sox on June 17th. In 24 games with the White Sox this year he batted .163 (8-49) with 3 runs scored, a double, a home run and 5RBI. He appeared in 16 games at third base, 3 games at second base, 2 games at short stop and 1 game in right field with the White Sox. Last year, Nix hit .224 (57-255) with 36 runs scored, 11 doubles, 12HR and 32RBI in 94 games with the Sox. He also stole 10 bases in 12 attempts and ranked 3rd among all American League rookies in home runs, 5th in RBI and 6th in slugging percentage (.408).
The Dallas, TX native owns a career Major League batting average of .200 (72-360) with 41 runs scored, 14 doubles, 13HR and 39 RBI in 140 games over three seasons with the White Sox. Nix was originally selected by the Colorado Rockies as a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds (44th overall) of the 2001 June Draft before being signed by the White Sox in October of 2008. He will wear #12.
Lewis has gone 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA (21.0IP, 21H, 9R/ER, 13BB, 14K) in 20 appearances over two stints this year with Cleveland. Valbuena has hit .166 (25-151) with 13 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2HR and 14RBI in 49 games thus far this season. Lindsay was claimed off waivers by the Indians on June 1 and was 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA (4.1IP, 1H, 3R/1ER, 7BB, 7K) in 4 appearances at AA Akron.
The Indians 25-man roster is currently at 24 as they will recall left-handed pitcher Aaron Laffey prior to tomorrow's game against the Cincinnati Reds at 7:05PM in Great American Ballpark. The Indians 40-man roster stands at 40.
Quick commentary: The move to send Valbuena to Columbus was long overdue. That said, I am miffed at why we are bothering with Jayson Nix here and not just promoting one of our own in infielder Josh Rodriguez who is in the midst of a heck of a season and currently playing at Columbus. Rodriguez arguably can do everything Nix can. I'm curious to see what the Indians say with this move.

Arbitration clock anyone? I just don't understand the arguments against Dolan being a cheap bastard.buckeyemania11;1722452; said:pfft, why give a young system guy a try when you can scavenge some bum off Waivers

This is officially the worst Tribe team I've ever had the misfortune of watching. I mean they suck [censored]ing balls. Of this entire [censored]ty roster, if I were starting a ML team, the only ones I'd take would be Santana and (maybe) Carmona/Choo. The rest I'd dump in the river.
The funny thing is, Smith was reasonably effective for the Mets. You put somebody in the Cleveland chicken coup and they just get infected with the suck.buckeyemania11;1722921; said:Joe Smith is just as bad as Dead Wood
we traded Franklin Guttierez .275 6 HR 31 RBI 8 SB this year so far, .283 18 HR 70 RBI 16 SB last year
for him and Luis Valbuena

I'd also like to point out what a magnificent all around player Branyan is. If we could have 25 guys like him on the bases and with the glove, we'd be world series bound. Sarcasm.
Absolutely. I can understand shilling out something for the occasional MR, but my eyes nearly bugged out of my head (as did most others here) when the Wood signing was announced. To shell out 10-11 million dollars a year for an aging closer with an extensive history of arm troubles spanning his entire career WHEN you know you're not even going to be competitive has to go down as one of the most mind boggling transactions in the history of baseball. In the real world, a move so exceptionally bad would be grounds for immediate termination. In Cleveland it gets you promoted.tsteele316;1722934; said:guys like kerry wood and joe smith are clear illustrations of why small market teams must build bullpens from within. anything else is just wasting limited assets.

I agree in principle, I just believe in accountability. Shapiro's moves (drafting, FA, trades) have put this franchise in such a hole right now, it's unbelievable. Three years ago, they were one game from a WS title (they would have creamed the Rockies if they got by Boston), now they're the worst tribe team in my memory and the man most responsible for the mess is getting a de facto promotion. It just burns me up.tsteele316;1722940; said:promoting shapiro to take him out of personnel decision making is a good move period. they can make him batting cage czar, or peanut vendor consigliere for all I care. just don't let him make the call on any more draft picks or free agents. you've already seen a clear shift in draft style the last two years once antonetti and grant took over for shap and mirabelli.
