Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Cleveland Indians blog: Carmona looking for his mojo, but never fear Ohka is here

CHICAGO -- In spring training GM Mark Shapiro said the Indians had enough starting pitcher to cope if something went wrong with his third, fourth and fifth starters, but that he had no solution if something went amiss with his No.1 and No. 2 guys -- Cliff Lee and Fausto Carmona.
Essentially he was saying, if something went wrong with Lee or Carmona, the season was shot.

Well, we all know what's gone wrong with Carmona. He got on plane Sunday to fly to baseball's version of Devil's Island. He'll land in Phoenix, Ariz., make the short drive to Goodyear, Ariz. where the Indians minor league pitching coordinators and mental coaches will try to put him back together physically and mentally.

Maybe they should bring back Eddie Murray to burn some incense.

Continued
but some good news, Jake Westbrook pitched in AA saturday 3 IP 1 H 0 R 1 BB 1 K
With Westbrook starting to rehab, I really can't see the Indians making any major trades until he comes back and makes a couple starts with the Indians. However, I don't know what good it will do if they are 13-14 GB's.
an error and a past ball resulting in the run. sowers pitched well enough to get out of the inning.
Even if that was the case, I guess I don't understand when Wedge is going to understand that Sowers has become a 6 inning pitcher. Maybe seven innings but that would be stretching him and his luck.

the bullpen trying their best to wreck the day

Luis Vizcaino loads the bases with no outs up 8-3 in the 8th

and now Rafael Perez comes in and promptly walks a run in, 8-4 with no outs

Perez survives with 2 Ks and a fly out to keep the lead at 8-4

I will still poke fun at them but I still think that they have a chance for a decent season. The Central Division is not that strong and if our relief pitching starts to come around we might be okay. I still don't like Wedge. Kansas City coming to town and they have lost nine out of their last 10 slow that is hopeful. Maybe I am getting too optimistic because we took two out of three from the Sox.

That's probably it. :wink2: The Chisox suck almost as bad as the Tribe does this year...

The Tribe has nowhere near enough starting pitching to put together a decent enough run. If, IF, they can somehow tread water the next couple weeks and not lose any more ground, and Jake can come back and be solid, then they may have a very slim chance at crawling back into it if everybody starts clicking. But I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

Something for the rumor mill...

Potential Indians-Giants deal

There are still a lot of rumblings about Mark De Rosa's availability. With so many teams needing hitters and good chemistry guys, the Indians may have to consider a deal. The Giants are pounding the door for hitting, and DeRosa's name has popped up in their internal meetings. The Giants would part with lefty Jonathan Sanchez.
Boston Globe
Coming from a Boston paper, of all places, I wouldn't put too much into this, but it's out there. As for Jonathan Sanchez, never really heard of him and his career stats aren't gonna blow anybody's hair back. Better off holding out until a little later when the pennant races are heating up...

When he's good, he's very good. Shut down the Tribe last July with 7-2/3 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 8 K. Did the same thing to the Reds last April. 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 10 K.

At the end of June last season, he was 8-4 with a 3.79 ERA.

He then finished the season going 1-8, giving up 45 ER in 56 IP over his last 12 starts (ERA of 7.23 over that stretch). Ended up 9-12 with a 5.01 ERA for the year. He's got great stuff, just needs to use it better.

Also, he pitched 4 no-hitters while attending Ohio Dominican.

If the Indians take a pitcher, I hope they get someone with a little more upside than Sowers/Huff

They need to go with a hard throwing righty instead of a soft-tossing lefty. guys like sowers and huff were taken because they were thought to be more major-league ready.

They need to take a guy with a higher ceiling, even if he's further away from the bigs.

I wonder if the fact that they have to pony up some scratch to sign their pick plays into the equation. It probably does chap Dolan a bit to pay out signing bonus scratch to have a guy sit in the minors for 4 years before making it to the show.
