Magnificent seven in ninth gives Cleveland Indians win over Tampa Bay Rays
by Dennis Manoloff / Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday May 25, 2009, 11:29 PM

The Indians might never lose again to Tampa Bay in Cleveland.
Victor Martinez hit a two-out, two-run single to cap a seven-run ninth inning as the Tribe defeated the Rays, 11-10, Monday night in Progressive Field.

Defending American League champion Tampa Bay has lost 14 straight in Cleveland dating to September 2005. The Rays entered 12-34 (.261) all-time in Progressive Field, the team's lowest winning percentage in any American League ballpark. Last season, Tampa Bay was outscored, 31-8, in a four-game series in Cleveland July 10-13.

Monday, the Indians chipped away at a 10-0 deficit through 3? innings with two runs in the fourth and two in the eighth, then went wild in the ninth.

The comeback victory was the Tribe's largest since Aug. 5, 2001, against Seattle. In that game, Cleveland trailed, 12-0, after three and 14-2 after six.

"The guys kept fighting," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "You score a couple, score a couple more, and you start feeling it and just keep going."
Ryan Garko was 3-for-5 with two homers, an infield single and five RBI. He belted a two-run homer in the fourth and a three-run shot in the ninth, the latter making it 10-8 with two outs.

Cleveland Indians right-hander Anthony Reyes might be done for season
by Dennis Manoloff, Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday May 25, 2009, 4:55 PM

CLEVELAND -- The Indians are recommending to right-hander Anthony Reyes that he undergo ulnar-transposition surgery, which would sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Reyes, who has placed on the disabled list May 23 because of elbow inflammation, will fly to Los Angeles later this week to see renowned Dr. Lewis Yocum for a second opinion.

An MRI exam today revealed inflammation of the ulnar nerve, Indians head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff said.

"The surgery would require 4-6 months of recovery,' Soloff said. "Anything else would be speculation.''

Reyes, who has a history of arm issues, is 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in eight starts. His velocity had decreased steadily.

He went 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six starts for Cleveland last season after being acquired in a July trade.

Probably one of the worst kept secrets. Grady is not nearly as bad as his numbers have been. Pretty obvious that something was wrong, glad he's finally able to admit it and get some rest.

Trip to DL may be in Sizemore's future

Crowe takes LaPorta's spot for Tribe as insurance

By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com
CLEVELAND -- Grady Sizemore's left elbow condition is not getting any better, and the Tribe's All-Star and Gold Glove winner could be headed to the disabled list for the first time in his career if it doesn't improve soon.

With Sizemore's elbow still bothering him, the Indians called up Trevor Crowe as a center-field reinforcement from Triple-A Columbus Tuesday. Top prospect Matt LaPorta was sent back down to Columbus after getting his first taste of the Majors.

While the 24-year-old LaPorta, who batted .190 (8-for-42) with a double, a homer and four RBIs in 13 games, will benefit from more consistent at-bats in the Minors, this move was made in large part because of Sizemore's condition. Crowe has the defensive skills to man all three outfield spots and is particularly adept at center, as Sizemore is currently limited to designated-hitter duties.

Sizemore, who started at DH for the fifth time in eight games, did not participate in any of the Indians' pregame activities Tuesday.

This team is a mess...
I totally agree and in talking to a another longtime Indians fan yesterday I have come to the conclusion that the fault should be placed on Wedge's doorstep. I have never been a big fan of his but it has mostly been because of his baseball strategy. However, the person I was talking to yesterday brought up an excellent point, and maybe I have missed it in this thread, but why was Wedge still reshuffling his lineup after the season started. What did he use Spring Training for:huh: I thought that was the entire purpose of Spring Training was to get your starting lineup set for the beginning of the season along with your roster. At the beginning of this season, the lineup was like a Chinese fire drill from day to day.

I wondered when the Indians found out about Sizemore's elbow. I hope that they don't delay shutting him down like they did Hafner. However, I will be interested in seeing what he does when he comes back completely healthy because his strikeouts have not just been something that starter this season so we can't blame the elbow for that.
any word on Scott Lewis?
I doubt if you will be available any time soon since he went on the 60 day DL on April 11. I think it will be a while before we will see him again in Cleveland with his past arm problems.

Using a different lineup every day has bothered me as well. I know your bench guys need some playing time to stay sharp but the changes have been excessive. The fact that they seemingly try to make every non-star player into a utility player only adds to the turmoil (and certainly doesn't help the defense).

He has always done this.

and the reason I have hated Wedge for a few years. In addition to the style he manages his team. Seems to wind these guys so tight they can't perform and only when the pressure is off they start to play like gangbusters.

The only time they really played well the whole season was when they had a loose clubhouse guy to counter Wedge's tightness. Bring back the pies!!!

Okay. That's it. He is out of here.:!:tongue2:

Also, Ronson is no longer in the bullpen in Akron so let's start the development in Columbus so we can get him to Cleveland in September along with the kid who threw a perfect game for Kinston. That kid has phenomenal numbers which I have misplaced.

I got a feeling the home winning streak against Tampa Bay comes to an end tonight

Zach Jackson on the hill

and Sonnanstines ERA is over 6, meaning he will easily mow down the Indians lineup
