Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

17 straight! :slappy::rofl::slappy:

First sweep of the year. 4 games. Wood makes quick work of closing the deal. 2-1 Tribe. Bullpen has been real solid the last 2 weeks.

Too bad Tampa Bay has to leave. Back to the real world. :(

The offense has been playing like we all thought they would and the house cleaning in the bullpen has helped. Problem is, outside of Cliff and Pavano (!), there's nobody you can count on to go out there and give you six solid innings. Carmona is a mess and is looking more and more like a one year wonder, Huff looked better today, but was blasted his first two starts, then there's the revolving door that is the #5 spot. There's a number of good arms on the farm, but I don't see any of them really contributing this year. Maybe Jake can be slid upon his return in about six weeks.

The good news is, the division is mediocre and despite the dreadful start, they're still not that far back. The bad news is, I don't see how we have the horses in the rotation to make a legit run at it.

Matt Herges has been lights out so far

13 IP 14K/3BB 1.35 ERA 0.60 WHIP

like NFBuck said though, the starting pitching depth right now is pretty much no existent, AAA has nothing, Tomo Ohka Jack Cassell and Kirk Saarloos is basically what we have there

hopefully Westbrook can be at least decent when he gets off the DL, and Scott Lewis whenever he comes off

Carmona is a lost cause, his control is non existent so basically we are winging it with the 3-4-5 slots which is going to make it hard to be in the race at the end

The Canadian Press: Cleveland Indians recall right-hander Tomo Ohka from triple-A

Cleveland Indians recall right-hander Tomo Ohka from triple-A
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ? 11 hours ago

CLEVELAND ? Right-hander Tomo Ohka was recalled by the Cleveland Indians on Thursday and left-hander Zach Jackson was optioned to triple-A Columbus.

Ohka spent parts of nine seasons in the major leagues with Boston, Montreal, Washington, Milwaukee, Arizona and Toronto, compiling a 50-63 record and a 4.14 ERA. His last major-league appearance was June 6, 2007 with the Blue Jays. He spent all of last season with the Chicago White Sox triple-A affiliate.

Ohka is 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA in nine starts this season at triple-A Columbus, but he will work out of the bullpen for the Indians.

To make room for Ohka on the 40-man roster, right-hander Anthony Reyes was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. He has an inflamed right elbow.

A lot of people snickered when Shapiro was signing guys like Herges, Aquino and Vizcaino but they have really stabilized the bullpen. With the unpredicability of relievers from year to year, I think it's a good strategy to sign a few of these type guys each year. They're low risk moves that can be quite valuable.

In order for this team to have any chance I think Carmona has to turn it around. Anything you get from Westbrook is a bonus. With Lewis' injury history, I'm not counting on anything from him either.

Hopefully Huff can get back to the form he had when dominating AA/AAA last year(8.8 K per 9 innings, 4.9 K/BB). I know he's not going to dominate like that in the bigs but he wasn't pitching well in AAA this year either. Maybe yesterday's outing will give him some confidence.

Then you've got Laffey/Sowers. I really like Laffey but who knows how an oblique injury will affect him and for how long. Sowers has shown flashes and was pitching great in Columbus but he seems to get hammered anytime he goes past 5. Perhaps you can live with a #5 starter who doesn't eat a lot of innings.

Of Ohka/Saarloos/Cassell the only one I can see getting a contribution from is Ohka. The other two aren't even succeeding in AAA. Ohka's nothing special but could help in the 'pen or as a spot starter. He has an okay track record and is pitching decent so far this year.

Don't really see any other guys on the farm who can help in the rotation this year. Hopefully Rondon & Gomez will be ready to compete for spots next year. Haven't heard much about De La Cruz's injury. It's a shame as he could possibly be in Akron by now and also in the mix for next year.

Chuck Lofgren GODDAMMIT. :slappy:

(Worst, or best part, is that homeboy is sporting about a 1.50 ERA, if he keeps it up, it won't be a joke anymore)

Speaking of Lofgren, he has been called up to Columbus and will start on Sunday. Another step to see if he is for real. I'm skeptical due to the fact that he does not get a lot of K's or groundballs and his BABIP is unsustainably low. On the bright side his walk rate is down significantly.
