Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Cleveland Indians infielder Andy Marte should find out soon about his future with the team - Cleveland.com
- Andy Marte, who made one start on this seven-game trip, is going to get some answers soon as to what his future is with the team.

The Indians open their last homestand of the season Tuesday against Detroit. General Manager Mark Shapiro will be conducting meetings with players to discuss their futures before they travel to Boston for the last four games of the season, Oct. 1 through Oct. 4.

"I'll see what they have to say when I meet with Shapiro," Marte said.

Marte is out of options. If the Indians want to keep him, they have to leave him on the 40-man roster. If they don't and he goes through waivers unclaimed, he can become a free agent.

From Aug. 20 through Sept. 13, Marte was playing every day at first base. On this trip, rookie Matt LaPorta has started at first base in six of the seven games. Manager Eric Wedge said he wants to see how LaPorta handles the position because he might start there next year.

Wedge also said he wanted to give Trevor Crowe a chance to play more left field. If LaPorta doesn't play first, he usually plays left, which made Marte the odd man out.

"I think I showed this year that I can play here," Marte said. "I'm struggling a little right now, but that happens to everybody."

Marte is hitting .227 (27-for-119) with three doubles, five homers and 19 RBI. He is in a 4-for-36 slump.

"If I don't play here, I'll play somewhere else," Marte said.

There had better be NO future.

Maybe he'll give you a coupon to Chili's as a parting gift.

Good luck in FA. I think you'll have a nice long career as minor league filler for some teams.

You've struggled for 3+ years you idiot.

Yep, somewhere on somebody else's AAA squad.

In a way, you really can't fault him just because he didn't hit:biggrin:. The organization should take the fall for M. for keeping him around:bonk:
It is amazing and dissappointing to see him fall this far. 19 game winning cy young candidate one year, Dontrelle Willis carbon copy the next.
excellent comparison. I really wonder how two guys can be so dominant for one year and be so bad for the rest of their careers.

He reminds me more of Hideo Nomo. Huge success until opposing batters figured out his delivery. Likewise with Carmona, batters figured out that they could just wait out his filthy pitches and force him to throw something hittable across the plate.

nevermind

Wedge actually makes a good decision and takes Marte out for Jamey Carroll

and Carroll draws a bases loaded walk to make it 3-1

Valbuena then goes on to strike out to end the inning

9 hits...1 run....pretty pathetic

Congrats to the tribe, I knew they could get into their normal position...
Surprising fact: The Tribe has only finished dead last in their division five times in franchise history. Last time? 1991. Granted, they did usually finish 5th or 6th in the then 7 team AL East for much of the 70's and 80's when their legend for ineptitude was forged. So this is actually unusual territory for them and another nail in Mongo's coffin.
