Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

well at least they are getting rid of the crap relievers they pulled out of other teams trashcans

Cleveland Indians will take a look at Jess Todd as Jose Veras is designated for assignment - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians designated for assignment right-hander Jose Veras after Tuesday's 10-1 loss to the Twins and recalled right-hander Jess Todd from Class AAA Columbus.
Todd was 4-2 with 24 saves and a 2.20 ERA for Class AAA Memphis this year. At Columbus, he has struck out seven with one save in three scoreless appearances covering four innings

Huff has been pretty consistently awful.

huff is jeremy sowers with slightly better stuff, but worse command. he was great in the minors at locating all of his pitches. now, he's lucky to throw fastballs for strikes.

on the bright side, this is similar to the problems cliff lee had before he finally put it all together.

Lofgren honored brother-in-law (Minor details)

I waited for Chuck Lofgren in the Clippers clubhouse Monday night to ask him a question about a baseball game that had slipped away despite his outstanding pitching performance.
In the course of the conversation, he told me about a death in his family that had occurred earlier in the day. The revelation stopped me cold. He said that his sister had called and awakened him with the news that "his brother" had lost a three-year bout with cancer. By comparison, the outcome of the game didn't matter.
We talked quietly for a couple of minutes. I asked for a name. He told me Carlos. I asked where he had lived. He told me Arizona. I asked how he had summoned the ability to pitch after such an emotional blow. And he told me that his sister and mother had asked him to honor Carlos in that way.
Chuck responded by pitching seven shutout innings. It was, I think, his best performance of the season. I offered my condolences and returned to the press box to rewrite a story.

Miller has successful surgery on finger | indians.com: News

CLEVELAND -- Right-hander Adam Miller is hoping to be ready for Spring Training after the second of two planned surgeries on his right middle finger was successfully conducted on Tuesday.

Miller, who was shut down with pain in the finger on Feb. 27, began rehab on the finger after a two-hour procedure by Dr. Tom Graham at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, Md. Graham reconstructed the flexor tendon in Miller's finger.

If all continues to go as planned, Miller could be ready by spring 2010.

Left-hander Scott Lewis is on the comeback trail again, and will be making first rehab start tonight for the rookie-level Arizona League Indians out in Goodyear, AZ. He is on a return to throw program and if he has no injury setbacks could be back in Cleveland by the time rosters expand in September. He'll likely make stops in Akron and Columbus before that.

I will admit that I have not read this entire thread since the beginning of trading time so I just thought that I would throw in my two cents and I might even miss a trade or two.

I already have forgotten what they got for Garko but as long as the player is still alive it was a good deal. I was getting tired of watching Garko try to run to first base. I think I might be able to beat him in a race:biggrin2:

I don't know much about the guy that they got for Rafael Betancourt but it was another guy who was going to demand too much money next year for all of his ups and downs. I know that they got a young arm and I have to believe that sooner or later one of the young arms is going to pan out.

At first, I did not like to trade for DeRosa because he was one of the few quality consistent bats that the Indians had plus he just seemed like a good guy but again we got a couple young arms and last night was any indication of Todd he looks like he might make a good setup man next year. I have my doubts about Perez but just getting Todd might be enough.

I had mixed emotions about Cliff Lee going to Philadelphia because this probably means that we will not be in contention next year and did not think that we got enough value for him. Carrasco is another young arm but after his first outing with Columbus I have my doubts. I guess the key to the deal was the 19-year-old Knapp but don't think he will be major-league ready for a couple years and just hope that his arm holds out. The catcher Marson has no power whatsoever and if he has no power in the minors he certainly isn't going to show any of the big leagues. We will just have to wait for Santana.

I was sad to see Victor go because he has been with the Tribe for so long and I wonder if the Indians management asked him if he would sign a contract extension through 2012 for lesser dollars. However, we did get a guy who looks like he might be able to become a quality starter down the road along with two other young arms to throw into the mix.

While I am tired of waiting for the Indians to start winning again I don't think that the loss of Lee and Martinez will hurt us that significantly in two years or even next year. I don't think that Cliff had any intention of re-signing with the Indians and it will be interesting to follow him next year because he has pitched quite a few innings over the past couple years.

Overall when I first saw the deals happening, I did not like it but after seeing a couple of the guys I think I will take a wait and see attitude. The only bad thing that I think has happened with all of these trades is that it probably means Wedge will be back. I think that they should bring in a new face to just freshen things up a little. I have no idea what is going on with Marte or JP. I just don't understand why they have put Marte at first base when there was all this jib jab about Laporta being so good and I have no idea what they are going to do with JP but he showed his true colors again last night with his 3 k's.

Dolan was on Cleveland radio today saying that the club will lose $16 million this year. So, assuming attendance next year matches this year's dreadful turnout, chopping Derosa's, Lee's, and Victor's salaries was a necessity.

If they can somehow manage to dump Kerry Deadwood's albatross, then maybe they can actually make moves to be competitive in 2011.

If there was any lesson to be learned from this year, it's that small market clubs must build their pitching, especially bullpens, from within. you can dumpster dive a #5 starter easy enough, but pen arms, especially closers, are not cost effective on the FA market for the return value.

The team is far more entertaining to watch now with crowe, marte, valbuena, giminez, and all the young pen arms playing every day.

For once, I totally agree with you:) the team seems to be playing with a little more spirit. Can't say why but it just looks that way.

During my downtime, I was watching some STO and I guess one of the things that I never realized was from everything that I have heard the Indians do not draft very well and that has really hurt them in the long run. This comes as somewhat of a surprise since I always thought that the Indians farm teams were some of the better ones. I guess you cannot blame this on Shapiro because he does not run the draft that is done by an entirely different department of the Indians and I don't know how much say he has in who they take.

On the financial side, I am somewhat baffled because I thought when the Indians came out with STO that it was supposed to be a revenue generator and put us ahead of some of the midmarket teams when it comes to finances. I have no idea what has happened in that area. I would have thought that would have made up for some lagging attendance.

I agree as well, and this is where fantasy baseball really enters silly season too, when you have enthusiastic kids like we have who hammer on noodle-armed pitching. I'm liking what I see out of several guys, but Cabrera in particular is really playing well.

Good win today...nice work by Carmona...maybe he'll get it back going for next year. He has won 19, so he can roll if he figures it out. Nice to see Sipp pitch well too...for some reason, I really like his potential.

+1

Deals weren't pretty on paper but they may/should end up being HUGE for the Tribe in the long run.

They got two quality young arms for Garko and Betancourt as well. Their only in A and AA but great pickups for two guys who had no future with the Tribe.

Don't post til you apologize to MuskieBuck on the scout board :tongue2:

Great seeing Carmona have a decent outing today. Drops his ERA down to 6.66 :paranoid:

And has Lee been filthy in the NL or what. 16 IP 2 ER and 15 K's

Trading a former Cy Young pitcher at the deadline and having him go to the NL and absolutely dominate......Sounds familiar

1. cleveland's drafts have been subpar. while shapiro doesn't necessarily run them per se, he selects who does. however, the '08 draft seems to be looking decent, and low and behold, cleveland was a little riskier in their picks. i've felt that cleveland has erred on the side of some safer picks, probably for signability reasons.

2. as for the apology, the dude got one thread deleted, and deleted his post in the 50+ page v-mart thread on II, which has subsequently had several posts outright deleted.

3. carmona's previous start really wasn't that bad, save for one stretch.

4. good AL pitchers going to the NL is a career builder, and a path to a major payday.

Cleveland Indians trade pitcher Carl Pavano to Minnesota Twins
by Paul Hoynes, The Plain Dealer
Friday August 07, 2009, 11:33 AM
CHICAGO -- The Indians today traded righthander Carl Pavano to the Minnesota Twins for a player to be named.

The Indians signed Pavano to a $1.5 million contract in January after he spent the previous four years with the New York Yankees.

Pavano leaves the Indians as their top winner with a 9-8 record.
Pavano is the seventh big league player the Indians have traded since June 27.

I can't say that I am sad but he was winning some games. Probably another cost-saving move
