Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Francisco would had gotten nothing more than a minor league filler arm......... certainly not anyone of much value

That's if you could get anybody to take him. He was a scrub who already maxed out his potential. I was fooled by him for a few weeks last year, but now I can see him for what he is.

6:05pm: After a little confusion, the deal is now official, according to a press release. The Phils add an ace and a right-handed bat, and the Indians receive four top rebuilding pieces. Ed Price at AOL Fanhouse says that Donald, Marson and Carrasco will all report to AAA Columbus and Knapp to A Lake County.

1:18pm: MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says Lee and Francisco haven't been told anything official yet, but they've read the reports.

12:59pm: Rosenthal reports that the deal would not include any cash. He calls the trade, which isn't yet official, a "coup" for both sides.

As for these guys supposed "struggles" this season, a lot of young kids have off years in the minors as they refine their games. Particularly pitchers who try to mix in new pitches or work hitters differently as they are coached up. They're all pretty young, so there's time for them to develop. Carrasco is still considered a top prospect despite his apparent struggles this year. From what I've read/seen, he could be a Matt Garza type...which I'd gladly take.

Rumors of Carmona taking Lee's spot and Crowe, not LaPorta to Cleveland. Christ, this team is run by chimps. What the fuck are they waiting for? It's not like LaPorta is struggling. :shake:

because sizemore's elbow is to the point that he can't play center field every day, so cleveland needs an OF that can play center, and that's crowe.

what's funny is that they recalled marte for his last hurrah, and he goes 2-3 with a walk yesterday, and he's out of the lineup today. only wedge can pull that kind of bullshit.

Guess that makes sense, but if it's that bad, and he's still struggling with the bat, why not just go back on the DL. It's not like they're playing for anything for christsake.

What better way to see if you have something then by playing him once or twice a week?

Following GM Mark Shapiro's conference call with reporters, allow me to try to sum up the front office's stance on the Cliff Lee trade in 100 250 words or less: The Indians decided that even with Lee on board, they had little chance of contending next season. That's because ownership told the front office that it will not commit any significant dollars to club construction in the offseason.

Knowing this, the Tribe explored all offers for Lee and accepted a package that includes three players who have the potential to impact the Major League club in 2010 and one 18-year-old with enormous upside. The Indians feel Carlos Carrasco is very close to Major League ready, Lou Marson can be, at worst, an average everyday catcher in the big leagues, and Jason Donald complements Asdrubal Cabrera and Luis Valbuena well up the middle. Donald will likely compete with Valbuena for the second base job next spring. As for Jason Knapp, the Indians are enamored with his big, strong body and his raw stuff.

With Lee and his $9 million 2010 option off the books, the Indians might have some money to commit to offseason construction, but Shapiro said he has no idea how much. The Indians are not ruling out a miraculous run at contention next year, but with the depth of talent from Double-A up to the big leagues, they feel they can put together a sustained run of contention starting in 2011.

That's the gist of it, from Shapiro's perspective. And though Martinez wouldn't comment on Victor Martinez directly, this trade makes a lot more sense if he's on deck on the trading block.
Obviously, there's a lot more where that came from, including comments from Shapiro, Lee, Francisco, Martinez and others, as well as the news that Fausto Carmona is rejoining the rotation and Trevor Crowe, not Matt LaPorta, is taking Francisco's spot in the outfield. You can find all that information and analysis at Indians.com in the coming hours.

ask the last 2 Cy young winners.

I don't mean the question to be as stupid as it sounds. Cliff Lee came up with the Marlins didn't he? I mean he cut his teeth with another organization IIRC. I know Sabathia was homegrown so that's good. I guess I should have asked about their history of developing pitchers in looking for a reason to get excited about Knapp. Sabathia would be great no matter who drafted him. Is there an organization that is known for developing great pitching?

I don't know. I felt alright about this trade yesterday and now after thinking about it it looks more like a dump than a move to try and rebuild. This team is so frustrating that it's not even fun to watch baseball anymore.

And what is the motivation for ANYONE to buy a ticket to watch this team next season?

false. philly refused to offer drabek and brown to toronto as well. happ was as high as they would go for halliday, and cliff lee is not halliday.

No offense, But I think I'll believe a baseball guy like Jason Stark when he says as such. JP Ricchardi even said none of those 4 were the ones they wanted! It really says something about your evaluation when none of the players you got in a trade were among the 4 that Toronto wanted.

Are you guys that like this trade setting the bar so low that any trade involving prospects is considered good ?

yep, the guys toronto wanted were guys philly thought were too good to trade for halliday. why you think cleveland would have gotten any of them for lee is puzzling.

lee was part of the bartolo colon trade to montreal. but, i guess you can give the expos credit for developing him all the way to high A ball before sending him to cleveland as a throw in.
