Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Umpires have had a TERRIBLE week, and again blow a HR call. Fransisco hit one 3/4 of the way up the railing in front of the bleacher seats in LF. Should be 12-9
I think it is time for MLB to get into the era of modern technology, like all the other professional sports, and use instant replay or even like NHL hockey pick up a telephone. Isn't it about time somebody does something.

The Indians' Grady Sizemore is tagged out at the plate in the sixth inning by Texas Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia as plate umpire Dan Iassogna looks for the baseball Friday. The Indians did a lot of things wrong Friday night at Progressive Field, but they deserved to be rewarded when matters went right.
Nope, not at all.
When you are mired in a losing streak, the baseball fates will conspire to keep it that way. That's one way to look at the Tribe's 13-9 loss to the Texas Rangers.
This latest setback -- the Tribe's seventh straight -- was summed up in the sixth inning as the Indians took their place in the recent controversy regarding home run calls.
Trying to rally from a 12-6 deficit, Ben Francisco appeared to have hit a three-run homer off Texas reliever Kameron Loe (1-0). But his drive to left field was ruled only a fair ball by third base umpire Damien Beal.
Replays showed the ball hitting a railing above the yellow line at the top of the fence before ricocheting back to the field. Francisco had to settle for a double as one run scored.

INDIANS INSIDER
Cleveland Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro says Tribe will get on phone with every team in Major League Baseball
Saturday, May 24, 2008
Joe MaxsePlain Dealer Reporter

A week that wasn't much has made all the difference.
After winning five of six home games to climb into first place in the American League Central Division on May 15, the Indians left town and promptly lost six straight to drop 4? games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox. Baseball may be a funny game, but there was obviously not much joy flowing at Progressive Field before Friday night's series opener against the Texas Rangers.

The way the offensively challenged Indians were swept at Cincinnati and Chicago brought concern at all levels.

"It's obviously frustrating for all of us," said General Manager Mark Shapiro. "It's tough on the players, the front office, the staff and the fans. It's easier for us here because we know about the amount of work being done by the players and the staff. That being said . . . "

With runs so scarce, 13 in the six losses, Shapiro said righting the ship when it comes to run production is the key. However, making a blockbuster trade for the quick fix was not that much of an option.

"Historically, big trades are not made in late May," said Shapiro. "With the way we're geared here, it's hard to talk about your young players, so there is a large gap between executing things and considering things. We will get on the phone with every team in the league, although sometimes a trade of magnitude comes down the road. We will explore everything at this point."
The lack of offense and the failure of the bullpen have been the obvious culprits. With the lowest team batting average in baseball at .231, it's impractical to deal the entire lineup, although the paying customers might consider it.

"You expect a number of guys to struggle, but the entire team is unprecedented," said Shapiro. "The track record is we'll get going. It doesn't make it any easier when you are going through it."

Let's hope that Carmona's hip injury is not that serious. I hope he did not hide it from the staff when he pitched the other night. That could be the reason he was so wild.

I don't understand why they sent Lewis down. He didn't seem to be pitching that badly and always had pretty good control. I don't know if I like the sending of Elarton. He did not do much for me last year when he pitched in the majors. Mujica was pitching pretty well in Buffalo in relief. It will be interesting to see if he has improved upon his last trip to Cleveland last year.

They should bring up some position players who can swing the bat and not just look at the ball as it crosses the plate.

I was at the game last night. I had no idea he was pitching until I sat down. He looked good.
