Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

this is the first time in 4 games that the bullpen hasent given up a run.

the offense should be able to get some runs tommorow against Doug Mathis who is making his 2nd ever MLB start, hopefully CC shows up

"Should" being the key word. The bats have been solid the last two nights, but trends indicate they'll probably go right back in their hole. I'm happy with any progress, but will withhold any judgement until they can string a few good games together. Hopefully the season long trend of making nobodies look like Cy Young candidates doesn't continue tomorrow.

It's amazing how bad these guys have gotten in such a short period of time. Should have seen it coming when the rest of the competitive AL teams went out and improved this offseason and good old Shapiro decided to stand pat. They look slow, old and disinterested out there and have one of the worst managers and worst hitting instructor in organized baseball. I was saying 75 wins this year, now I'm thinking more in the 66-70 range. Of course, that seems to be falling with each pathetic outing. It's just a sinking ship taking on more water each game. :bonk:

The worst part is that we don't have hardly any top notch prospects on the farm either to get excited about. At least then, we could look forward to some August-September call ups. it looks like we're on the verge of another major rebuilding project. My 1 June deadline on Shelton still stands. After that, I'm tuning out. Like I've said, this isn't just bad baseball, its boring baseball. I'll check back in around the deadline in the hope that they'll at least make some moves, but I ain't counting on it.

Indians blunder in extra inning Ben Francisco misplays ball, but game is lost on missed opportunities
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, May 26, 2008
CLEVELAND: Probably thousands of kids ran the bases at Progressive Field after the Indians' 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday.
Every child made the circuit, ending the journey at the plate. Some held the hand of a parent through all the left turns; others were carried by their mothers or fathers, who knew the route.
Finding the way home is a fundamental goal of the game, but one that the grown men who make up the Tribe lineup, players making at least hundreds of thousands of dollars, have been unable to attain consistently.
It is true that the proximate cause of the club's eighth defeat in nine games was Ben Francisco's error, which allowed Jarrod Saltalamacchia to score from first on Ramon Vazquez's single with two outs in the 10th.

Carmona out, Laffey still safe Starter to miss a month. Westbrook's replacement to remain on the roster
Published on Monday, May 26, 2008
CLEVELAND: Good news for Aaron Laffey is bad news for Fausto Carmona. That's the way it works in baseball.
Carmona will be out for an estimated four weeks after injuring his hip in the third inning Friday night against the Texas Rangers.
''Fausto suffered a mild strain of his left hip,'' head trainer Lonnie Soloff said Sunday after medical specialists studied an MRI scan of the affected area. ''He will be out approximately four weeks and will not play catch for seven days. If he is asymptomatic after that, he will begin exercise and start a throwing program.''
In other words, once Carmona is pain free when he walks briskly or negotiates stairs, he will be permitted to initiate a throwing program wherein he plays catch from ever-expanding distances.
''That would be followed by a mound program, then we would build him up in simulated games,'' Soloff said. ''Fausto already has started several games, so his arm is in condition. Because of that, we hope that he will be able to climb back on the horse very quickly.''

Wedge anticipates roster changes Tribe manager warns anything could happen
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, May 26, 2008
In the next few days, Jake Westbrook will return to the rotation and outfielder Shin-Soo Choo will be summoned from Buffalo with the hope he can move the offense forward.
But are any other roster alterations contemplated?
''There could be multiple things happening,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''We're not afraid to do anything now. It's almost the end of May. They're going to figure it out, or we're going to have to make changes.''
STILL HOPING ? C.C. Sabathia, who has been supported by four runs in his past three starts, continued to talk up his lodge brothers who carry bats.

Cleveland Indians lose to Texas Rangers after Tribe's hottest hitter makes gaffe in outfield

Rookie getting it done at bat, undone in right
Monday, May 26, 2008Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
Ben Francisco has been one of the good things to happen to the Indians during the first two months of the season. The rookie outfielder has done everything asked of him to spur the club out of its offensive funk.
So it seemed totally unfair that it would be Francisco's glove that did him in during Sunday's 2-1 loss in 10 innings to the Texas Rangers. At least that's probably what the 35,464 took with them as they left Progressive Field after the Tribe lost for the eighth time in its past nine games.
But when things are going bad, even the routine plays become arduous. How else to explain Francisco allowing Ramon Vazquez's two-out single off Masa Kobayashi (2-2) to go through his legs in right field for a two-base error that allowed Jarrod Saltalamacchia to score the winning run from first base.
