Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

tsteele316;933842; said:
head to head matchups don't count towards anything unless cleveland and detroit are tied on the last day of the season, and have both the central and wildcard spots won.

if cleveland and detroit tied, and the yankees had the wildcard won, head to head matchups mean nothing.

Not that it matters after last night's game, but that mean they would play in a playoff game, correct?

Everybody settle down. Remember a couple of things:

1) Indians win tonight, and they are back in first place
2) We still have a better record (barely) than the Tigers, so they are sucking now too
3) This is a murderous stretch of the schedule for Detroit right now.

LOT of baseball left.

Great post, I agree! Do we all feel a little better now? There wasn't much room left on the ledge back then. Of course, to me Michigan sports teams= horror movie villains; even though you think they are dead, they still scare the hell out of you. The state of Ohio has slayed a lot of demons this year...

Maybe it's just me, but I think the Indians(and the Res Sox FWIW) are built for playoff baseball.

The Indians have two elite pitchers and a third that is way above average in Byrd. We have an excellent bullpen, especially if we can get 6 innings out of our starter(The two raffys and Borowski are the best 7-8-9 in the American league IMO). We have good to great hitting throughout the entire lineup. Good power at a lot of spots in the line-up(Sizemore, Garko, Hafner, Blake, Martinez, and even Gutz and Peralta), but we can also string together the hits with players like Cabrera, Lofton, Martinez, etc....

I think I'd like to play the Yankees in the ALDS. How about the rest of you?

That's fine... I guess I don't really care. Got to beat everyone... the Yankees are actually pretty hot right now as opposed to the Angels and BoSox, though... I think part of the Angels issue is the Mariners have died and have no urgency though...

But, a lot of me feel like the Yankees are more or less going to "blow their load" trying to catch Boston... or staying ahead of Detroit.

The Yankees have owned the Indians this year. Conversely, the Angels have owned the Yankees since their World Series run. Under a best-case scenario, the Indians would face the Red Sox, whose pitching staff beyond Beckett is in disarray. Then the Angels would take care of business against the Yankees, setting up an LA-Cleveland ALCS.

Yeah... but... how many times did the Yankees see Sabathia and Carmona?

(Answer, zero and 1 respectively... and.. the 1 was Borowski's now infamous meltdown after Carmona dominated them)

I actually don't see a "best-case scenario" that involves the Angels to be honest.

The first game of the most recent three-game set with the Yankees, Carmona got knocked around quite a bit by their lineup.

EDIT: Carmona pitched 7 innings, gave up 4 ER in a loss to Phillip Hughes. Byrd, on the other hand, got hit up for 7 ER in 2 innings last time out against the Yankees. Sabathia did not pitch.

Cleveland Indians defeat Detroit Tigers, 7-4

Four HRs mustered by Tribe
Wednesday, September 19, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
The last and most fleeting of all baseball elements, power, has rejoined the Indians. They left it behind at the All- Star break, but like a faithful Labrador retriever, separated from its family on a camping trip, it showed up a couple of days ago, scratching at the front door of Jacobs Field, just in time to help win the American League Central.
The Indians used the homer for the second game in a row Tuesday night to come from behind and beat Detroit, 7-4, in front of a sellout crowd of 41,103 on Dollar Dog Night. They reduced their magic number to five and took a 6?-game lead over the Tigers in the Central with 11 games to play. The Indians are a half-game behind the Red Sox for the AL's best record.
Ryan Garko, Travis Hafner, Victor Martinez and Franklin Gutierrez homered Tuesday off 17-game winner Justin Verlander. Homers accounted for the Tribe's seven runs.

Cleveland Indians' playoff run intoxicating, Terry Pluto says

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Are you having fun yet? Do you believe the Indians are heading to the playoffs, that they deserve to go to the playoffs and nothing is going to stop them from going to the playoffs?
Are you like the sellout crowd of 41,103 at Jacobs Field that may have come partly for the dollar hot dogs, but gave themselves fully to the Tribe?
Are you feeling it? Are you wearing red at Jacobs Field, like so many fans did on this perfect 72-degree evening? Are you staying up late in case Casey Blake - yes, Casey Blake! - hits another Walk Off Home Run?

INDIANS INSIDER
Cleveland Indians' Trot Nixon contributes with pies

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Trot Nixon, who brought the power of pie to the Indians, has had second thoughts about his creation.
"I want to be known as a baseball player, not a pie guy," said Nixon.
Nixon started hitting the star of Indians games in the face with whipped-cream pies while they were being interviewed on TV early in the season. The fans loved it, the players laughed and it became an instant tradition.

The only problem with using Byrd, if we do, in the playoffs is that KS has been his "designated" catcher all season and I really don't want to take Garko's bat out of the lineup. Victor could catch him but he is so used to KS catching him I wonder if it would make a difference.
