Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Blake's blast completes Indians' comeback

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- For most of the season, victory for the Indians has tasted like whipped cream. Soon it could taste like champagne.
Casey Blake got a faceful of the former and a whiff of the latter after hitting a home run in the 11th inning that gave the Indians a come-from-behind, 6-5 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Their magic number for clinching the American League Central is seven, meaning any combination of wins by the Indians and losses by the Tigers adding to seven will send the Indians to the postseason for the first time in six years. It seems inevitable that they will break out the champagne, the traditional means of celebrating a division title.

Playoff placement becomes important now. If, as expected, the Yankees win the Wild Card, then either Cleveland or LA will play New York. Considering our performance against their lineup this year, I don't think we want to see the boys from the Bronx. So maybe we don't want the best record in baseball - maybe we're better off if the Angels, who own the Yanks, play them in the first round and we square off with the Red Sox. Plus, if we have a better record than the Sox, we would still have homefield advantage.

Ideal situation:

1. Angels
2. Indians
3. Red Sox
4. Yankees.

It would be nice to win the Central at home but that probably would mean that we would have to take the next two from the Tigers and then possibly sweep Oakland with Detroit losing a game over the weekend. I just hope we clinch the Division title before Sowers pitches again.

Who would have thought JP would hit two home runs and Blake hitting another walkoff. What a ride:)

I think the magic number right now should actually be 6, because we just took the season series from the Tigers. So if we take the final two and sweep Oakland, it's O-V-E-R.

Cleveland Indians' win puts Detroit Tigers on ropes, says Bill Livingston

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
This was the win that meant October, no matter what the magic number says, no matter that the calendar says it is premature.
It took two swings for the Indians to turn defeat around.
Casey Blake took the second one and with it hit his second walk-off home run in four days. This one, hammered off Zach Miner, streaked on a line into the second row of the stands in left-center field, as the fans erupted in a celebration that felt like old times.

INDIANS INSIDER
Jeremy Sowers likely to start for Cleveland Indians next week

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Jeremy Sowers, who hasn't worn an Indians uniform since June 10, rejoined the team Monday. Manager Eric Wedge strongly suggested Sowers would start one of the games Sept. 26 when the Indians play a doubleheader against Seattle at Safeco Field.
It has not been the best year for Sowers.
After going 7-4 in 14 starts for the Indians last year, Sowers opened 2007 in the rotation. He went 1-6 with a 6.93 ERA in 12 starts and was optioned to Class AAA Buffalo on June 10.

Just got home from the game tonight and it was incredible there tonight. Not only did I get to do my best Kobayashi impression on dollar dog night, but what a great game to watch and be a part of. Sell out crowd, 1st place vs. 2nd place in the heat of a divisional race in late September, Detroit's ace on the hill and our boys are out there hitting BOMBS!! When Pronk hit the dinger to tie it up, the place went nuts. Not something I have been a part of at the Jake since the mid 90's. It was just really fun. BIG props to Jensen Lewis for coming in and throwing 3 innings of no hit ball. What a huge performance by this kid, first major league win. Frankie hits the towering bomb to seal it, and JoBo actually pulls out a 1-2-3 inning for the save. Man, all was right with the world tonight. Got to abuse some Detroit fans, got a resounding round of :oh::io: going with the crowd, especially, of course, when they played Hang on Sloopy, and was part of one of the longest Waves that I have ever seen at any sports game. It nearly lasted the entire inning. Man, I can't wait for October baseball again in Cleveland.

watched a good bit of the game on STO last night and it was strange to see that place rocking like that this late in the year, looked like a blast (even if i do hate the indians)

BTW chicago lost last night and now owns last place in the central by a half game, and they are now only 2 games out of worst record in the MLB!!! :groove:

head to head matchups don't count towards anything unless cleveland and detroit are tied on the last day of the season, and have both the central and wildcard spots won.

if cleveland and detroit tied, and the yankees had the wildcard won, head to head matchups mean nothing.
