KANSAS CITY, Mo. Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez homered, and Aaron Laffey won in his third big league start as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals, 9-4, Saturday night.
The Indians batted around in a five-run first against Kyle Davies before Sizemore led off the second with his 22nd home run. Martinez, who also had three hits, delivered his 19th with two outs to make it 7-0.
The Indians, who now lead the Detroit Tigers by 21/2 games in the AL Central, had been struggling offensively, scoring three runs or less in 18 of their previous 29 games while hitting just .238.

Kansas City, Mo.- Bob Wickman isn't coming back to Cleveland.
The veteran closer, in a surprise move, was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on Friday. The Indians, searching for relievers who can pitch in tight situations, seemed like a logical fit. He's their franchise leader in saves and they traded him to the Braves last year.
But the Wick will not be relit in Cleveland.

Kansas City, Mo. -- The thing about a baseball game is that it can change so fast. A team can be soaring one moment, falling the next. The game with no clock can torment by the second.
"That's why you can never stop fighting until the last pitch," said Indians manager Eric Wedge.
In the Indians' 5-3 victory over Kansas City on Sunday in 11 innings, Grady Sizemore faced what could have been the last pitch of the game six times in the ninth. The Royals led, 3-2, with two out. Closer Joakim Soria got a 1-2 count on Sizemore with the bases empty. The crowd was standing, cheering for the last out.

Asdrubal Cabrera gives Cleveland Indians a lift

Kansas City, Mo. -- The Indians have played the second half so tight they could rent themselves out as violin strings. Then along came Asdrubal Cabrera, who knew nothing about the choke of 2005 or the no-show of 2006.
He doesn't care that the Indians are trying to steal a division from a Detroit team with a payroll pushing $95 million compared to the Tribe's $61.5 million. Cabrera is just playing baseball, and apparently he's exactly what the Indians needed.
Cabrera was promoted from Class AAA Buffalo on Aug. 7. Eight days later, he replaced slumping Josh Barfield at second base. They're 7-3 since the move.

I agree with you in some regards but Nixon has not been playing much in the past week finally and, as of Saturday, Blake is now batting 9th. Hopefully, it is not too late because they really could have extended their lead.I blame Wedge more than anything. His carnival carousel of batting lineups have got to be driving the hitters batty. It is not Shelton's fault that Wedge has fallen in love with Trot Nixon and loves batting Blake at the top of the linBut
If the fact that he is not playing center field is messing with Lofton's hitting, put him on the bench and let J. Mike play left field..since someone mentioned Lofton, I think with him it is all mental, while his skills aren't what they were 4-5 years ago he was still hitting .300 when he got here. He was always a very ego-centric and proud player. I think the combination of him not playing CF, playing part time and not batting leadoff is messing with him. When a player is use to playing all the time, a decrease of playing time can throw off your timingeup
and the Indians win.Wow, Blake just turned a triple play...pretty freaking cool
Indians' offense tees off on Twins

CLEVELAND -- Carlos Silva threw a few sinkers last night that did not sink, pitches ripe to be hit hard.
For most of the past two months, Indians hitters talked of seeing such pitches, reaching for them, and coming up with just another fistful of sand. Either the oasis was a mirage, or they were reaching in the wrong places.
For one night, at least, they found sweet relief. The hitters who have been lost in a slump swung at Silva's unsinking sinkers and smacked line drives throughout Jacobs Field, and the Indians chewed up the Minnesota Twins 8-3.
