Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Bench Nixon with game on the line
Wedge should platoon outfielders in left and right
Published on Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007

Scribbles in my Tribe notebook...
Manager Eric Wedge has most of this figured out, but let's give him some help in a few areas when it comes to juggling what is not exactly a perfect roster.
Yes, Trot Nixon has started to hit .353 since the All-Star break and .294 in July. But, please, take him out of games for defensive purposes! What happened in the 4-1 loss Sunday to the Minnesota Twins makes it sound like a pure second guess Nixon failed to run down a line drive to right in the eighth inning when the Indians were in front 1-0. It's no secret that Nixon is still recovering from back surgery and can't move well. Nor is his arm strong. He is a below-average outfielder, and that is not about to change.

Indians notebook
Attendance trends looking up
While trailing contenders, team expects large crowds as division race develops
By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007
CLEVELAND: The Indians continue to lag behind other playoff contenders in attendance, but the situation is improving.
Overall, the Tribe has lured 1,463,835 fans to Jacobs Field and Miller Park (three games moved to Milwaukee count as home attendance for Cleveland). That's an average of just more than 26,000 and projects to a season total of 2,091,200 for 80 dates.
Unfortunately for the club's bottom line, the Indians will be one game short of the norm, because a ''home'' game is scheduled as part of a September doubleheader in Seattle to replay the final game from the snowed-out series in April.

As deadline approaches, confident Indians downplay need for a trade

Players downplay need for a trade
Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Mike Peticca
Plain Dealer Reporter
Mark Shapiro is likely on his cell phone now, looking to bolster the Tribe's pitching staff before today's 4 p.m. trade deadline.
There's little doubt manager Eric Wedge and pitching coach Carl Willis are anxious for their general manager to find a willing trade partner.
Tribe players, though, are confident the pitching is already good enough to make a successful run at the team's first postseason berth since 2001.

disappointed we didn't get another bat....i'm confident enough in our bullpen, and really wouldn't feel any more confident in Dotel or a repaired Gagne

Tonight's game has been an awful display of offense (thruogh 4 innings)....McCarthy has sucked this year, and hasn't really shown much but every hitter seems to want to knock it out of the park......Carmona hasn't looked great either, but he's throwing enough strikes and getting outs (no runs through 4)....It's funny that Victor stated a few months ago, he doesn't even normally ask for a location, he just puts his glove over the plate and hopes Carmona has his good stuff that night

I really do not know who else the Indians would have went after as far as a bat. I would have liked to see them bring in a proven vet for the bullpen but we do have plenty of young arms in the pen. I think playing Gutierrez more often will help the bats. But they are just slumping right now and not getting hits when they need to. Thankfully Detroit has hasn't played well recently either. When the bats warm back up look for them to go on a hot streak.

i agree the bats will warm up, but the approach looks poor right now.....truthfully, i haven't had the opportunity to watch any games over the last week, but tonight has been brutal...I swear from the first inning it has looked like every hitter wants a piece of the McCarthy they got earlier this year....Unfortunately this isn't a home run derby, and it'd be nice to get a few guys on w/o hitting into a double play

Major League 2007

starring...
Grady Sizemore as Willie Mays Hayes
Travis Hafner as Pedro Cerrano
Casey Blake as Roger Dorn
Victor Martinez as Jake Taylor
Francisco Cabrera as Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn
Jake Westbrook as Eddie Harris
and
Eric Wedge as Lou Brown

Randy Newman's "Burn On" should be played prior to every home game until these guys start playing like a real Major League team again. Four hits again. Fucking pathetic.:smash:

IId Also Like To Point Out That Excellent Piece Of Fielding By Casey Blake In The 6th inning

As much as I don't like Blake, he is just one of Wedgie's favorites, the ball did take a bad hop on him. The Indians need to realize that they need a 3rd baseman who can hit. Your corner infielders are supposed to be your hitters and Blake certainly is not one of them regardless of his hitting streak this season which he only maintained by getting 1 hit and a lot of games.
