Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Apparently when needed, they will send Mujica back down and bring up Laffey from Buffalo. I still think they should bring back Sowers, unless he is out of options. Sowers has more experience and has proven he can win.

You only use one option a season. After you use it you can ship them up or down as many times as you want. Since Sowers was already sent down they can bring him back whenever. I would like to see him get another good start or two in Buffalo before they bring him back.

Rumors I have heard today:

- Apparently the Tribe is "on the verge" of either trading for Octavio Dotel from KC or Jason Isringhausen from St. Louis. Have heard both today with people claiming to have "inside sources."

- I have also heard a few people say to not be surprised to see the Indians move Cliff Lee out of Cleveland all together in a trade. His poor pitching as of late has just hastened this as the bigger issue is his shitty attitude and his inability to be coached.

We'll see what happens, should be an interesting next few days.

Dotel would be a great add to the Tribe, so long as he takes over the closer role immediately.

It's so cool seeing Lofton in an Indians uniform again. Aside from Sandy Alomar, he was my favorite Indian during those great 90's seasons.

Good game so far. Who would have thought before the season started that Paul Byrd would be such a rock in our rotation?

Peralta also having a really good game with 2HR and 5 RBI.

I like our potential outfield rotation now. Sizemore, Lofton, Gutierrez, and Francisco. Nixon should not play another game for us, barring injury(knock on wood).

I found that out after I posted it.

I don't quite understand that. I wouldn't want him starting every day, but he'd be a great option for pinch hitting and he could be a match up starter. I guess they don't trust his youth or consistency.

We must be comfortable with Michaels that we don't want to rush Francisco.

I really like the potential of a Sizemore, Lofton, Gutierrez outfield, with Michaels giving guys days off.

Francisco was pretty much the only option other than cutting Michaels or Nixon.
Big win tonight, let's hope they can keep it up. The announcers said it best before the game. Trading for Lofton took what would have been a down day after the Boston whooping last night and turned it into a positive day.

What is suprising to me about Cliff Lee is that no one claimed him off waivers.......a left hander who won 18 games.........it is suprising to me.....I love the Lofton deal........he puts pressure on the defense and gives us more speed.....

Kenny Lofton this season: .303 average 7 home runs 23 RBI 21 stolen bases

CLEVELAND -- Kenny Lofton was cheered from the moment he pulled into the players' parking lot at Jacobs Field yesterday. When he walked to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, wearing the familiar Indians No. 7, the crowd serenaded him with a 30-second standing ovation.

Lofton is a tangible reminder of the Tribe's pennant-winning past, and as such he remains hugely popular. But it is the tangible effects he can have on the club that convinced team officials to bring him back for a third stint.
The Indians acquired Lofton from the Texas Rangers yesterday for minor-league catcher Max Ramirez. They also optioned struggling pitcher Cliff Lee to triple-A Buffalo, never mind that he is being paid $2.75 million this season and is owed at least $9.5 million in the next two seasons. Both moves were made with one goal in mind:

Indians 10 | Twins 4
Offense backs up Byrd in a big way

Saturday, July 28, 2007 3:30 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- The Indians deepened their lineup yesterday by acquiring outfielder Kenny Lofton, and their power was on display in a 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The bullpen has been strengthened by the emergence of rookie Rafael Perez, and it could be further bolstered with a trade in the coming days. The primary area of concern is the back end of the starting rotation, and any improvement will have to come from within.
Paul Byrd knows the stakes. He signed a $7 million-a-year contract before last season to bring stability to the rotation, and although he cannot lift Cliff Lee and Jake Westbrook out of their slumps, he can give the Indians a chance to win every fifth game. He can do this season what he was unable to do last season.

Tribe topples Twins

Lofton gets three hits, Peralta homers twice

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Could there be a relationship between the departure of the annoying and talented Boston Red Sox (and their fans) and the Indians' sudden surge Friday night at Jacobs Field?
Or maybe the Tribe was responding to the addition of Kenny Lofton, acquired from the Texas Rangers earlier in the day. Or maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with the arrival of the Minnesota Twins.
The Indians can't seem to get enough of them. In six meetings, the Twins have lost six times, including Friday night by the score of 10-4.

Lofton returns to play for ring

He'll be out in left field but savvy vet relishes being back in Cleveland

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Same old Kenny Lofton, and the pun is intended.
Lofton is 40 going on 30, and if there's one thing he knows, it's where he belongs and what he can do.
``I missed being in Cleveland,'' he said Friday after being traded from the Texas Rangers to the Indians for catching prospect Maximiliano Ramirez. ``I enjoy Cleveland, and it's the place that helped me get to where I am today.''
Which is right back in Cleveland. More important to Lofton is what Cleveland represents: a chance to be on a World Series winner, an achievement that has eluded him, even though he has been in the postseason 10 of the past 12 years with six teams, including the Tribe five times.

Indians notebook

Lee sent down to find problem

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - It didn't take long after Cliff Lee's fourth consecutive sub-par start Thursday night for the Indians' deep-thinkers to take action.
Lee was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to figure out why he is 5-8 with a 6.38 ERA.
``I think this is the right thing to do,'' General Manager Mark Shapiro said Friday. ``I was extremely pleased with the way Cliff took it and the way he took accountability.''
Shapiro said he anticipated that Lee might need to alter his approach.
``We knew Cliff had to make some adjustments,'' Shapiro said. ``We thought hitters had adjusted to him, and he had to do some things different. But Cliff missed spring training (with an injury), so he had to do it during the season.''

Lofton's return to Cleveland a big hit

Associated Press

Kenny Lofton's first at-bat as a member of the Cleveland Indians in six years was anticlimactic. By the end of the night, however, fans were thrilled to have the veteran back. Lofton began his third go-round with Cleveland by getting three hits and playing left field for the first time as the Indians beat the visiting Minnesota Twins 10-4 on Friday night.
Jhonny Peralta added two home runs for Cleveland.
"It was emotional at first," said Lofton, who was traded from Texas for minor league catcher Max Ramirez earlier in the day. "The fans were cheering and I was trying to calm myself down the first time up. I didn't know what to expect and it was nice to go out there and show the fans I have a little bit left."
