Cleveland Indians pitcher Fernando Cabrera designated for assignment

Thursday, August 02, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Fernando Cabrera was officially designated for assignment Wednesday afternoon, joining a growing list of Indians pitchers who have been unable to stay in the big leagues this season.
Left-handed starters Jeremy Sowers and Cliff Lee are already at Class AAA Buffalo for repairs. Cabrera is the third reliever after Jason Davis and Roberto Hernandez to be designated for assignment. The Indians traded Davis to Seattle. The Mariners later designated him for assignment and sent him to the minors when he went unclaimed on waivers.
Hernandez went unclaimed on waivers and signed with the Dodgers. The Indians have 10 days to trade, release or put Cabrera on waivers.

Cleveland Indians lose to the Texas Rangers, 9-6, in 10 innings

Rookie pitcher's wild throws aid in fourth straight loss
Thursday, August 02, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Indians' defense, quiet and competent for much of the season, was found wanting for the fourth straight game Wednesday night at Jacobs Field.
Rookie right-hander Jensen Lewis made two bad throws in the 10th inning as Texas scored three runs to beat the Indians, 9-6. The Indians, 2-7 on this 10-game homestand, have lost four straight for the first time this season.
"We need to play better at the start of the game and in the middle of the game to make it easier on ourselves at the end of the game," said manager Eric Wedge.

Had my first two a day, good to see the indians win. What did the lineup look like?(i am being lazy, thanks in advance)
Well, Hafner sat. Grady DH'd in his place (still leadoff though), while Lofton played CF.

I guess that's the only shakeup. Gutz played right and Jason Michaels was in LF but that's usual when they face lefties.

G Sizemore DH
C Blake 3B
V Martinez C
R Garko 1B
J Peralta SS
J Michaels LF
K Lofton CF
F Gutierrez RF
J Barfield 2B

5-0 today. It looks like Westbrook has righted the ship.

It's looking good for Westbrook right now....

Did anyone notice that Asdrubal Cabrera was promoted to Buffalo? The way this kid has shot up through the minors has me wondering if he's our future SS. Has anyone seen Cabrera play?

Minor League Baseball: Stats: Player

I wouldn't mind seeing Peralta move to third.....

While in the Mariners' organization, Cabrera skipped the Double-A level. He reached Triple-A Tacoma in 2005 at the age of 19. Last season as the youngest player in the Pacific Coast League, he was leading all shortstops with a .986 fielding percentage before his trade.

You gotta love that fielding percentage. If this kid progresses, Peralta at third could become reality. I wish I could feel as optimistic about Marte, who's ship may have sailed.

yea, Id say trading Eduardo Perez to Seattle for Cabrera is looking pretty good on our part

On the subject of Marte, ive never been impressed with Marte I dont think he will ever be anything more than a minor league all-star

Maybe road smoother after 3-7 homestand

Victor Martinez shook a 1-for-26 slide with a home run in the seventh inning of the Indians' 5-0 win over the Rangers.

CLEVELAND -- The Indians left town yesterday and headed for Minneapolis and the edge of heartbreak. Their four-game weekend series against the Twins will take on extra meaning for the home fans in the wake of a bridge collapse Wednesday near the Metrodome.

On a different level, the games could be cathartic for the Indians, as well. Even after beating the Texas Rangers 5-0 yesterday, the Tribe's postseason positioning has become perilous. They went 3-7 on the just-completed homestand and saw the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees climb within striking distance of their wild-card lead. A change of scenery can't hurt.
"Whatever it takes to win games right now," Casey Blake said. "We'll take whatever we can get."
