Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

ABJ

Indians have playoff look

Not perfect, but still pretty good in the first half. Improved Lee, Westbrook and relief help needed

By Terry Pluto

The Indians score a ton of runs, hit more home runs than any other American League team, draw lots of walks and close out games.
They haven't lost more than three games in a row this season. Take a bow for that, C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona and Joe Borowski.
Yes, Joe Borowski, ladies and gentlemen, is your American League saves leader with 25. Those 25 saves are one more than the Tribe had as a team in 2006.
Carmona (10-4) and Sabathia (12-3) are the first pair of Tribe pitchers to enter the All-Star break with at least 10 victories since Early Wynn and Bob Lemon in 1956.
Nice company for those two young starters.

FROM MINORS TO MAJORS
Indians' success aided from below

Wednesday, July 11, 2007 Dennis Manoloff

Plain Dealer Reporter
As the Indians played well in the first half -- they sit sec ond in the Central, one game back of Detroit -- the top affiliates held up their end.
Class AAA Buffalo, Class AA Akron, advanced-Class A Kinston and Class A Lake County all entered the week with winning records.
More importantly, the major-league club has received instant-impact help from below. Starting pitcher Fausto Carmona, outfielder Ben Francisco and reliever Rafael Perez headline those who have contributed to Indians victories.

Now concentrate on C.C.!!!

Even though he's large, he's never had serious injury problems, and he's been getting better in recent years IMO. I'd love to see C.C., Carmona, Lee, anchor our rotation for the next 4 years(at least).

IMO CC is gone. He will want $20 million per for at least 6 years. While he is certainly coming into his prime, he is a large guy that could eventually have lingering injury problems as he ages.

I'm hoping we can do some damage in the playoffs this year, and that will entire C.C. to stay, but I'm guessing the Angels or another Cali team offer him loads of money that we can't pay. :(

Don't we have two pretty good pitching prospects in AAA though(I don't follow the minors as much as I should)?

I think they have some good prospects. I would hate to see C.C. leave, but if he is going to get 20 mil a season elsewhere and isn't willing to give them a home team discount they need to trade him this off season so that they get something for him. I don't see the Tribe being able to throw around that kind of money.

There is a guy named Lofgren at Akron and there is also Adam Miller at Buffalo who are supposed to be can't miss prospects.

I agree that Dolan will not shell out the dollars to keep CC around after next year. He is going to demand more money than Zito because he is younger and more of a power pitcher. I would not be surprised if he is not signed by the end of spring training next year that they try to get something for him next season unless they're making a big run.

I really don't see Lee as one of our "anchor" guys unless you read he turns it around in the 2nd half. He is not a power pitcher and really does not have quality stuff. Byrd has been a very pleasant surprise this year and I would not mind the Tribe signing him to a two-year extension.

I don't disagree with your premise, but I'm not sure anyone is giving him $20 mill per, especially for 6 years. As for the size part, David Wells is a 40 something obese alcoholic and has remained fairly healthy until his later years. CC would only be 33 at the end of a 6 year deal, I'm not worried about the health yet.

is $20 million per a stretch? look at what zito got. look at sabathia at this point in his career compared to zito. it's hardly a stretch.

I agree. C.C.'s entering his prime and is a legitimate staff ace...plus a lefty to boot. I could see Oakland or Anaheim, or Los Angelas Angels of where ever throwing a ton of dough at him. Hopefully Miller is the real deal and will help ease the inevitable loss.

Hafner reportedly agrees to $57 million extension

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner has agreed to a four-year, $57 million contract extension with the team, according to several media reports.
The deal would keep Hafner in an Indians uniform through the 2012 season.
Cleveland general manager, Mark Shapiro, and Hafner's agent, Scott Parker of Legacy Sports Group in San Francisco, reopened negotiations on the contract extension over the All-Star break, according to broadcast and Web site reports. Negotiations had stopped early this spring.
Hafner's current deal runs through the 2008 season. His contract for this year is reportedly being increased, as is his option for next season. Continued...

Big move. Pronk is my favorite Indian, now hopefully with this matter settled he can go on one of those tears he's known for.

so, the $57 million is actually deceiving.

he's signed through 2012, which means he's with the club for 5 more seasons total, and his total contract starting in 08 is $57 million. it's not really a $57 million extension. it's really a pay raise for 08 with a 4 year $48 million extention.

that's a fair deal for both sides.

Its great news definitely a fan favorite... now if they can just find a way to keep CC in Cleveland for a few more years. Hmm maybe the Indians can use Tressel to talk to CC's mom and get him to sign for a little cheaper.:oh:

Fear there won't be any hometown discounts for CC.. Need to pay market price or he's CA or AL East bound... I would hope we realize we need to step up if we want to get the ring(s)...
