Indians relish dramatic win

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have made late-inning rallies so routine of late that Josh Barfield added a new wrinkle to the on-field celebration last night. When Ryan Garko hit a game-ending single in the ninth, Barfield leveled him with a flying shoulder block.

Garko absorbed the hit and a shaving-cream pie to the face from Trot Nixon, which has quickly
become a post-victory ritual for the Indians, and plotted revenge on Barfield, his roommate.
"I told him, 'The next time you hit a walk-off, you better have your head on a swivel,' " Garko said with a smile.

Sabathia puts Indians in hole

Indians manager Eric Wedge, left, argues with first base umpire Larry Young after Ben Francisco was called out at first in the sixth inning.

CLEVELAND -- Indians ace C.C. Sabathia stood stunned on the mound, unmoving, as another ball carried toward the outfield fence. The first, hit by the esteemed Emil Brown, sneaked over the yellow line in right field for a three-run homer. The second, by the feared John Buck, bounced high off the left-field wall for a double.

Sabathia seemed to regain his bearings after Buck's blast, but it was too late. The last-place Kansas City Royals scored five runs in the first three innings last night and held on to beat the Indians 6-5.
It was Sabathia's second straight ugly outing. He allowed seven runs in four innings against Detroit before the All-Star break. From the start of that game through Buck's leadoff double in the fourth inning last night, Sabathia allowed four home runs, six doubles and 12 runs in a little more than seven innings. His ERA rose from 3.20 to 3.83.

Another fine performance by Fausto who is now 8-0 in day games. If you would have told me he would have 11 wins by mid July before the season started, I would have said you're crazy.

Big game by Pronk, hopefully with the pice of mind of a new contract, he'll get back to his usual self. Garko is warming up now too. Go Mariners.

Jason Michaels slides past Royals catcher Jason LaRue to score in the sixth inning.

CLEVELAND -- With a solid April, Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona reaffirmed his status as a prospect, never mind his suspect performance last season. With a brilliant May, he secured a spot in the rotation as the hot hand worth riding.
In June and July, Carmona has graduated from a curiosity to someone the Indians can count on. It is often the toughest step for a young player to take, and there will be doubts about his staying power until he proves otherwise. Carmona erased a few more yesterday in a 5-3 win over Kansas City.

The Indians are 373-366 under Eric Wedge, who became the team's manager before the 2003 season.

CLEVELAND -- Manager Eric Wedge received a three-year contract extension from the Cleveland Indians today, an early reward for having his ballclub near the top of the AL Central.

Wedge, who in his first four seasons did not get the Indians to the playoffs, was signed through this season with the club holding a club option for 2008 and 2009.
But with Cleveland (54-37) trailing the first-place Detroit Tigers by a half-game entering the week and leading the wild-card chase, the Indians decided the time was right to extend Wedge's deal through the 2010 season.

Tribe has high card

In win over Royals, Carmona shows he's approaching ace status

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - So what if C.C. Sabathia stumbled in his past two starts, Fausto Carmona was backing him up.
Carmona ensured that the Indians would not suffer the indignity of losing twice in a row to the Kansas City Royals by leading the way to a 5-3 win Sunday at Jacobs Field.
In seven innings, Carmona (11-4, 3.77 ERA) gave up three runs, eight hits and two walks and struck out four.
``One thing, today Fausto had to work for it,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said. ``He threw a good game, but he wasn't as sharp as he has been.''

No more slump for Hafner

Player hits two-run homer, singles twice Sunday in game against Royals, boosting average to .266

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Who is batting .314 with three home runs and nine RBI in the past 13 games? Can't be Travis Hafner; he's in a slump.
Not anymore. Hafner's two-month ordeal is a thing of the past. He proved it again Sunday by hitting a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Indians on the scoreboard and help trigger a 5-3 win over the Kansas City Royals.
``For Hafner to get us going like that was as important as anything,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said.
In addition to the home run, Hafner singled twice to boost his average to .266. Overall, he has 15 homers and 60 RBI, so even during his batting skid, he must have been doing something right.

Plain Dealer columnist Bud Shaw goes to bat for the Indians' Ryan Garko

Monday, July 16, 2007 Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
In this first series after the All- Star break, Ryan Garko could've earned the name Dr. Strangeglove II (he didn't), and you'd have still written him into the lineup every day.
Games were won because of him. Another pitcher got Tasered by one of his line drives. Had he needed a compass and pitchfork to locate and secure ground balls, no one would've cared or noticed.
Kansas City's Gil Meche was the victim of Garko's latest target practice Saturday, taking a liner off his back.

Well, the offense battles back valiantly from an enormous defecit courtesy of Lee and Cabrera against one of the worst offensive teams in baseball, but falls short 11-10. Pronk continues to hit well and Victor homers again.

Cabrera is out of options right? Either way, I think it may be time to cut him loose. He's a goddamn liability. He's been getting clobbered almost every time out since a good April.

White Sox 11, Indians 10: Stirring comeback falls one run short

Tuesday, July 17, 2007 6:03 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- When Indians outfielder Franklin Gutierrez hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning last night, the crowd of 21,460 at Jacobs Field serenaded him with polite applause. The game seemed out of hand, but a homer by the home team is worth cheering on any occasion.
Who knew it was merely a warm-up, for the Indians offense and the fans' vocal cords?
After about 90 minutes of sustained screaming in the stands and straining in the home dugout, the Indians had cut a nine-run deficit to one. It was perhaps their most impressive rally in a season full of them, only to end one run short with an 11-10 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
The fans stood and applauded in the seventh inning when center fielder Grady Sizemore leapt high at the fence to rob Paul Konerko of an extra-base hit. They erupted when Travis Hafner hit a two-run single in the eighth inning. They let out a roar when rookie reliever Rafael Perez struck out the side in the ninth.

Wedge finally gets his reward
Manager agrees to contract extension through 2010 season
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 3:37 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have been among the best teams in the American League since opening day. They have signed two of their impending free agents to contract extensions, and fans have slowly returned to Jacobs Field. The buzz around the ballpark is largely positive.

It was against that backdrop that general manager Mark Shapiro approached manager Eric Wedge at the All-Star break about a contract extension of his own.
They discussed it during spring training but agreed to wait until the season ended. The positive momentum was difficult to ignore, though, and yesterday the Indians announced they signed Wedge to a three-year extension through the 2010 season.
