Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

LitlBuck;874278; said:
I would give Adam Miller a few more appearances in Buffalo and if he is still okay send Mujca packing as quickly as possible.

I definitely would like to see how this kid will perform at the big league level. He has been considered the Tribe's top prospect for the last couple of years and it seems like he probably would have had a couple starts in by now if he had not had the injury. I think you are right though LitlBuck, give him a few warm-ups at Buffalo. I just don't want to see them jerk him around back an forth from the bullpen to starting and shuffled back and forth from Buffalo like they have done with some of their promising prospects of the past. I am glad they let Fausto start and he has excelled their. I was afraid they were going to ruin this kid with moving him back and forth from the rotation/setup/closing and from Cleveland to Buffalo.

It's a Ben Francisco treat!

Homer in ninth wins it for Tribe, ends night of firsts for outfielder

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - To the chagrin of the Indians' marketinig department, Friday turned into Edwin Jackson Night at Jacobs Field.
But not the whole night, thanks mostly to Ben Francisco, who with one swing of the bat became Northeast Ohio's newest sports hero (is a bobblehead already in the works?).
Francisco led off the ninth inning with a towering drive over the left-field fence for his first major-league home run, as the Tribe eked out a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Called up for the second time this season on June 20, Francisco was playing left field and making his first major-league start, which would have been enough in his personal pecking order of achievements.
Francisco knew when the ball left the bat he had won the game, and he was still grinning 20 minutes later in the clubhouse.

Indians report

Byrd stays away from his wild side

Starter's stinginess with walks this season will rank among best in modern era if he can continue pace

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Walks are boring, so the fact Indians starter Paul Byrd rarely issues a walk makes him Mr. Excitement.
Then again, it's doubtful he looks at it that way. But that makes Byrd's achievement no less meaningful. In 14 starts, he has walked only five batters, two intentionally.
He has not issued an unintentional walk since the third inning of an April 26 game against the Texas Rangers, a span of 72 2/3 innings.
When did he become so determined not to walk batters? He didn't.
``All this started when I decided I wanted to throw the first pitch on the inside or outside third of the plate instead of right on the corner,'' Byrd said. ``The last time I checked, when a guy walks up to the plate and swings at the first pitch, he hits less than .100.''

50 wins by the All-Star break. A grand slam by Grady, Fausto bounces back after getting pummeled and Ben Francisco continues to hit...I'll take it.

Also, Perez and Bettencourt are becoming a nice little 1-2 punch out of the bullpen.

Would've been nice to see Blake's homer live...

I'll take the win regardless.

I guess I'm not the only tribe fan who still gets nervous when Borowski comes in for saves. That's good to know.

But man, our bullpen is surprisingly good. It's actually a strength this year. How refreshing.

Great line by Cleveland's Casey Blake a couple of weeks ago in Cleveland on a hot and muggy day. "Heat wave hits Gotham City," Blake said while walking by the batting cage during BP. "If it gets any hotter, we're going to have to go to Milwaukee to play." You might remember that infamous four-game Indians-Mariners series in April that was lost to snow, and the subsequent three-game Indians-Angels series that was moved from Cleveland to Milwaukee's Miller Park because of the snow and cold?

With Fausto Carmona's victory, the Indians have two 10-win starters before the All-Star break for the first time since 1956.

TORONTO -- Cleveland right-hander Fausto Carmona says his focus these days is slowing down his routine on the mound. As a result, the wins seem to be piling up much more quickly.

Casey Blake hit a three-run homer, Carmona won consecutive starts for the first time in almost two months and the Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-4 yesterday.

`Different' Carmona wins 10th

For the first time in 51 years, two Indians pitchers have reached that plateau before All-Star break

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

TORONTO - It was the story of two young pitchers.
In the visitors' dugout, Fausto Carmona, failed closer for the Indians in 2006, possible 20-game winner this season.
On the home side, Shaun Marcum, coming into his own after only 10 starts for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2007.
Bottom line: The Tribe hammered Marcum to win 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre.
Carmona (10-4, 3.85 ERA) was not quite at his best, but it was hard to tell for sure, because there were a couple of plays in the field that might have been made, but weren't.
And with nine runs to work with, it didn't matter. But this does: For the first time since 1956, two Indians pitchers have won 10 games (C.C. Sabathia has 12) before the All-Star Game. Fifty-one years ago, Early Wynn was 10-4, Bob Lemon 10-6.

Ocker on the Indians

Wedge making all the right moves

Fans slow to give praise even though manager has Tribe in contention

By Sheldon Ocker

TORONTO - I've never judged a manager by the moves he makes on the field.
More important in determining a manager's competence is the role he plays in setting the tone in the clubhouse and whether his team is playing the game the right way -- with enthusiasm -- for an entire season.
Most managers shift their chess pieces around the board in much the same manner. They calculate the percentages associated with lefty-righty matchups, figure the pluses and minuses of putting runners in motion, when to bunt, when to take out a pitcher.
I'm not saying each manager robotically is programmed to run a game precisely like every other manager. There are differences, and some are important.
