Wakefield Wilts in Game 4 Loss to Tribe

By HOWARD ULMAN
AP Sports Writer
CLEVELAND ? Casey Blake hit Tim Wakefield's pitch over the left-field fence ? eerily similar to the drive Aaron Boone hit exactly four years earlier.
Another playoff loss for Wakefield and the Red Sox.

Not fair. Wake pitched a very good game, IMHO. No hitter through 3, only gave up 2 runs total (I think?). The Blake HR shook him up, but the Sox bullpen didn't do their job. Don't lay this defeat only at the feet of Wakefield.

Agreed. He pitched pretty well until the 5th. He was credited with 5 er, but 1 bad inning will kill you and it did for him, but up to that point, he pitched well.

Great job by Byrd and Westbrook. After CC and Fausto getting lit up, they pitched great in pressure situations. Same goes for the pen.

I'll assume that your numbers are correct. However, he was pulled in the fifth inning. He couldn't finish the fifth. Regardless of how many runs his offense scored (or didn't score), I wouldn't call that a "very good game." A "very good game" would require that he pitched 6+ innings, in my opinion, and gave his bullpen a better opportunity to complete his game.

That said, 2 runs in 4+ innings is far from terrible, and had the bullpen finished that inning, the Red Sox would have had a much smaller hill to climb.

I really believed that the Tribe hitters would get to him at some point. They just had to adjust to the knuckler and I knew they would get to him. You could see on that pitch that Blake crushed, he was just waiting on it like slow pitch softball.

I really believe that C.C. will get the job done on Thursday. He knows he was pressing his last time out to be too perfect and he just needs to go out and do what he did all year and just go out there, trust his stuff and win the game.

I think I give Beckett about a 4 2/3 chance out of 10 that he makes it through 6 innings tonight.

I think the key for tonight's game is to get an early lead to get the crowd into the game and hopefully derail Beckett a little bit.

Just two runs through the first four innings would suffice IMO.
I hate to tell you guys this, 'cause I'm kind of anxious to get on with it too, but tonight's an off night... :wink2:

Random thoughts

If this were a fear years ago and it was not the playoffs, Manny would have had a ball stuck in his ear by a veteran pitcher. Many is a great hitter but that was classless.

I thought for sure we would see Joe in the ninth inning but for some reason Wedge decided to let Raffy go back out. I know that it was not a save situation but it just seemed sort of odd.

I was happy as hell when they brought in that fastball guy and he had to face Johnny. If there is one thing that Johnny likes, it is a nice fastball.

The Fox announcers once again sucked as especially when they were talking about how good the Red Sox developed their players. They don't develop shit they just go out and buy. If they wanted to talk about a team who develops players, they should have spent a lot of time talking about the Indians.

I hope C. C. gets it done tomorrow night because I am a little leery of Fausto pitching in Boston. Sometimes he gets to emotional but hopefully C. C. will close the deal.

Couldn't agree more and couldn't diagree more.

I agree with the few years ago part.

I disagree about the playoffs part. As I stated last night, right after Manny's theatrics, the next time he came up, assuming the situation was right, he should have been planted. Manny's next at bat was top of 8th, 2 outs and nobody on, Tribe up by 4 runs.....the situation was right. In that situation, Raffy B should have either planted Manny on his fat ass with a fastball or planted a fastball in his ass.

Totally agree... I just didn't phrase it very well. The playoffs should not have been a factor.

Hah...

Does anyone here actually think Manny knew what the score was at the time of the HR?

Seriously...

I'm honestly not sure that if you ear holed him he'd even understand why...

Besides... up 7-3... in the LCS... why even acknowledge that some idiot "showed you up" when you were and are up 4 runs?

Yes Manny... you can hit... you're gonna be in the hall of fame... unfortunately none of Drew, Crisp, Mirabelli, Lugo, or Pedroia was on base when you were up... why? Because those guys forgot to show up... hit all the solo shots you want... :wink2:
