Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Indians anticipating shot at Series redemption

CLEVELAND -- In the long, tortured history of the Cleveland sports fan, few events have the psyche-battering staying power of the John Elway-led "Drive" in 1987 or Earnest Byner's goal-line fumble a year later.
The beloved Browns suffered two crushing defeats on the cusp of Super Bowls, and all because of the hated Denver Broncos.
Cleveland never exacted its revenge on Denver on the football field, but now this city is a win away from watching some favorite sons pursue a different brand of payback. Redemption road goes through Jacobs Field and the 2007 Indians, those surrogate saviors in spikes.

A day after the Colorado Rockies advanced to the World Series for the first time in franchise history, the Indians moved within a game of making it a matched set. With a 7-3 victory over Boston on Tuesday night, Cleveland is one victory away from its first Series appearance since 1997, and a chance at its first title since 1948.

ALCS moments of truth

CLEVELAND -- On Thursday night, a third pennant in 12 years awaits the Cleveland Indians and anyone wondering how a playoff series that once looked so even has tilted so deeply to the Indians' favor -- far enough that the Boston Red Sox are in danger of being decisively punched out of the postseason just days after winning the opening game of the American League Championship Series in a laugher -- need only to make a checklist of the money moments over the last three games and see which team is flush and which is dead broke. The Indians lead three games to one with a potential clinching Game 5 on their home field not because the Red Sox have given this series to them but because the Indians have taken it, overwhelming the playoff-tested Red Sox with a winning combination of determination and aggression that began in the sixth inning of Game 2 and has continued ever since.

You've got next year to plant one in Manny's ribs. You're up 4 in the 8th, as much as you want to, you don't plunk him.

If you wait until next spring, it will be much more painful when it's cold out.

I've been pulling for the Tribe to make the classic all offseason. The sports bridesmaid tradition must live on! :p

Had I offered you that pre-season, would you have taken another ohio loss at the end?

Hey, if the Browns can lose in the Super Bowl, I'd be pretty damn happy.

Actually the more you look at the creativity of their work
the more you like it; however, they should have just one feather in the back.

Manny's celebration a really dumb gesture Did he forget the score? Did he forget the location? Did he forget his manners?
Published on Thursday, Oct 18, 2007

CLEVELAND: Sometimes we forgive the behavior of kids because, after all, it's ''just kids being kids.''
So it goes with Manny Ramirez, a kid in a grown man's clothes who sometimes does the most bizarre things.

Cleveland Indians' C.C. Sabathia aims to control his emotions in ALCS Game 5

C.C. Sabathia aims to do it - in his head and on the hill
Thursday, October 18, 2007Jodie Valade
Plain Dealer Reporter
C.C. Sabathia will take deep breaths. Just like before.
He will visualize his pitches, trying to stay in the here-and-now. Just like before.
And he will try to keep his emotions steady and stop his heart from becoming too big, no matter how raucous Jacobs Field becomes, no matter how many times it might creep into his mind that a trip to the World Series is on the line. Because that's nothing like anything he's encountered before.

Back of Tribe's rotation throwing 'quality' strikes

Thursday, October 18, 2007Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Indians' two Cy Young Award candidates, C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona, have pitched poorly against the Red Sox in the ALCS. The Indians' No. 3 and 4 starters, Jake Westbrook and Paul Byrd, have pitched well.
Boston hitting coach Dave Magadan said Westbrook and Byrd have been getting ahead with quality strikes.
"There's a big difference between throwing a strike that splits the plate, belt-high, and throwing one on a corner, at the knees," Magadan said. "Westbrook and Byrd have gotten ahead in the count with good pitches. They're changing speeds with them, too. As a hitter, you don't really want to swing at the borderline pitch right away."

Indians, city simply wonderful

Thursday, October 18, 2007 Linda LydenRensselaer, N.Y. Win one for Kenny
I am 58 years old and have grown up an Indians fan. My earliest memory is of the parade on Euclid Avenue in 1954 when the Tribe won the pennant. In 1996, I had Indians tickets and took my two youngest children to the game. My youngest son was 10 and had just awakened to being a baseball fan. When the game ended, we bought a ball at one of the souvenir stands and trooped to the fenced-in players parking lot at the corner of Ninth Street and Carnegie.
