Tribe shrugs off Ramirez's self-amusement

Thursday, October 18, 2007Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
It was hot-dogging worthy of Nathan's, styling worthy of Vogue.
Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez did not simply hit a majestic homer in Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday night. As the ball sailed far over the right-center-field wall in the sixth inning, Ramirez posed at the plate, raised his arms, walked one-third of the way to first, cruised around the bases and gestured toward the Indians' dugout.
Other than that, he respected the game.

Up next: ALCS Game 5

Thursday, October 18, 2007

fter a day off, the American League Championship Series resumes tonight in Jacobs Field. The Indians lead the best-of-seven series, 3-1. They lost the opener before winning three straight, including a 7-3 decision in Game 4 Tuesday night at Jacobs Field. Casey Blake had five total bases in a seven-run fifth and Jhonny Peralta went 2-for-4 with a double and three-run homer. The Indians have scored seven runs in an inning twice in the series. The ALCS has been 3-1 on 14 occasions; the team with three victories won 10 of the previous 13 series. The Boston franchise owns two of the three comebacks: from 3-0 to the Yankees in 2004 and from 3-1 to California in 1986.

Fans, coaches remember slugger when he played in Canton

Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez hammered a home run to center field Tuesday night and immediately threw both arms up in celebration. He?d just narrowed the Indians? lead to four runs ? generally not a time to rejoice.

Tribe will advance with win tonight
Thursday, October 18, 2007
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Win today. That?s the concept that has been hammered into the heads of Indians players all season long.

Don?t think about yesterday. Don?t think about tomorrow. Just win today.

Tonight, however, is a wee bit different than just another game against Kansas City in August. There is, in fact, no reason at all to look ahead or behind.

If the Indians ?win today? this time, they will be playing in the World Series.

Manny: Losing's not the end of the world
UPDATE: 10:04 PM, Wednesday, October 17, 2007
Mike Fine
GateHouse News Service

CLEVELAND This might come as a shock, but Boston Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez isn?t worried about his team?s chances in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday night at Jacobs Field.

?We?re confident every day,? Ramirez said, giving his first locker-side interview of the season. ?It doesn?t matter. We?re not going to give up. We?re going to play the game and move on. If it doesn?t happen, who cares? There?s always next year. It?s not like it?s the end of the world.?

So, chill out Boston. That?s how Ramirez feels.

Manny's still 'being Manny'
By David S. Glasier, Journal Register News Service
10/18/2007

CLEVELAND -- Manny Ramirez always marches to the beat of his own drummer.

Sure enough, Ramirez lived up to his ''Manny being Manny'' reputation yesterday at Jacobs Field.

On the off day between Games 4 and 5 in the AL Championship Series at Jacobs Field, before the Red Sox took batting and fielding practice, Manny sat down in front of his stall in the visitors clubhouse.

Glory days could be ahead for Cleveland
BY Jim Ingraham, MORNING JOURNAL WRITER
10/18/2007

The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive.

The Indians should know.

That's where they left the over-stuffed Yankees: bloated, wrinkled, confused.

It's also where, tonight, they'd like to leave 35-year-old Manny Ramirez, 35-year-old Jason Varitek, 33-year-old Mike Lowell, 31-year-old David Ortiz, 41-year-old Mike Timlin, 40-year-old Tim Wakefield, 40-year-old Curt Schilling and the rest of Boston's broken heroes, on their own last chance power drive.

Out of gas, out of flash, and, in at least one case, out of class.

An Indian win tonight would be first pennant clinched at home in 87 years
Jim Ingraham, Morning Journal Writer
10/18/2007

CLEVELAND -- The Indians are still waiting for their first C.C. Sabathia sighting of the postseason.

They are hopeful it will happen tonight.

If it does happen tonight, tomorrow is looking pretty special for the Tribe.

If C.C. is more than so-so tonight there's a good chance the next game the Indians will play will be Game 1 of the World Series.

Tonight at 8:21 p.m., the Indians can win the American League pennant with a win over the Boston Red Sox in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series.

Mound efficiency returns for Indians as Game 5 looms

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND -- Before he ever threw a pitch, Indians reliever Rafael Betancourt had the first rule of pitching drilled into his head. "As a position player, I'd always hear the pitching coach say, 'Keep the ball down and throw strikes,' " Betancourt recalled this week. "So when I started pitching, that's what I did."

Josh Beckett will pitch tonight for the Red Sox in a rematch of Game 1 starters. Boston trails Cleveland 3-1 in the series.

CLEVELAND -- History gives Josh Beckett and the Red Sox a pretty good shot. They've come back from big postseason deficits. Then again, they didn't do it against these Cleveland Indians.
