Indiana at tOSU, November 21st, Noon on Fox

We saw what they *could* be....and then we saw what they are.

In the past, especially under UFM (other than 2018) and Tressel, thats been a good thing because usually they improve. This group seems to be moving in the other direction.
I don't know that it's moving in *any* direction. From one series to the next, I don't know what to expect. They had rough stretches in each game so far. They played an outstanding first half, for the most part. The second half was total crap. Same against Rutgers. They had a bad first half against corn, then shut them down in the second half. It's just wildly inconsistent...to me, anyway.

Some regression is expected when you lose that amount of talent and an outstanding DC, but there's more than enough talent here that it shouldn't look like GERG-era scUM defense.
I just think this isn’t really the year to determine that. Bama’s defense returned a fuck ton of talent and they gave up damn near 50 to a trash Ole Miss team. Clemson’s defense has looked shaky as fuck when they’ve had experienced players out. 2020 is more or less a mulligan year for defenses.

First, Indiana is a good team. No, they're not Clemson or Bama, and yes I get that there is no confidence for OSU to play well right now. BUT, Clemson has a loss and it wasn't due to Lawrence being out. You can't convince me of that when a backup goes for 450 or whatever. Alabama got fucking lit up by Ole Miss, which has a fucking pathetic excuse for a D, not a good one like Indiana has. So, we can panic, but that also needs to be said.

  1. Fields. Justin played his first bad game, and it's clear he needs to work on quick decision making. That being said, I actually think this is good game film for him to have. Some awful mistakes, some bad ones, and a review of what worked and what didn't against a defense that resembles a hyper-aggressive Clemson.

  2. Offense. Racked up 306 yards rushing and 300 passing. As good as Indiana is at pressuring, they had no answer at times. The running game showed great potential. Reason to be very excited.

  3. Play calling. Day overthought some of the planning and playcalling in this game. The offense ate up yards and yet left lots of opportunities on the table. Instead of taking what the defense was giving them (around 400 yards rushing if called more), Day tried to play this game like all the others; pass to set up the run. At times they diced them up with screens, quick passes, and runs, and then it would inexplicably disappear.

  4. Defense. The back 7 is struggling to communicate and shift to the correct assignments. Part of that is youth, part of that is coaching making things too difficult. Coombs needs to simplify things.

  5. Officiating. The defense struggled, but OPI and holding was continually ignored by officials. And when that happens, you're going to get into a shootout. You can expect the defense to correct assignments, but there's nothing you can do when the pressure you bring is being held and WRs are picking DBs 10 yards down field.
4 games in and I still don't have a good read on this team. At times they look flawless on offense, then there is a sudden shift. It's concerning how up and down they can be. But I also don't think the sky is falling.

A lot of issues we saw today by Fields are aberrations and can be corrected. Same on defense. But yeah, they do have to be addressed. This game will provide good learning opportunities, but it only matters if things are corrected.

That's true the 4th down they dropped that Klatt kept harping on he conveniently missed that they had 3 WR's blocking and they had WR's blocking consistently. Also that Lack of replay on the 2nd drive was pathetic.

But fields was off and high. Threw 2 where he shouldn't have thrown and pretty consistently forced more difficult passes instead of taking wide open guys. And on a lot of those blitzes he was just slow to make a decision one he had garret Wilson wide open 20 yards down field and double clutched then was sacked.

And I can agree with that. But, it shouldn't be as bad as it is right now. I think IU has a tremendous staff, so maybe we don't see this kind of game again, but getting torched like that in the secondary is alarming...fucked up year, or not.

We beat a top-10 team. Most people making the picks don't watch the full games and absorb as much as we do as fans. Alabama has had some clunkers this year. So has Clemson. I don't see a dominant team. Maybe we slip a spot or two, but I don't think we tumble.

There is no where for us to tumble to. We're undefeated Cincinatti isn't going to jump us. If we win out we and play 6-7 games we are in if it gets to 5 or less it's Scary.

Bolded my point of contention... not to single anyone out on our media but after the Ped game Tim May gave massive amounts of praise to Coombs when he shouldnt have.

He told Coombs that it felt like an NFL defense with how multiple they were and Coombs gave some cocky response that May wasn't wrong.

That's the issue. Day said when he was hired he wanted to be simple but fast on defense.

Yet here we are complex and inept just like in 2018.

Hold to what you wanted in 2019 Ryan. Simple but fast because that's not what we are right now.

This is ALSO true of everyone we're playing.... young, no summer workout, etc.

It's not an excuse to let a team with a negative run game put up 500 in the air on you. We didn't adjust when they couldn't run and that speaks to Coombs, not the lack of practice.

You sound like tOSU was the only team hampered by COVID. We weren't.
No shit which is why almost everyone on the country has a shit D this year.

It started against the pedsters. That 2nd half was shitastic too really.

This team coasts when they get up.
