Indiana at tOSU, November 21st, Noon on Fox

I don't necessarily think Coombs is the problem. The problem is that Chase Young, Damon Arnette, Jeff Okudah, and Jordan Fuller aren't on the team this year and their replacements just aren't as good.
That’s definitely an issue....but if you can see that then maybe the D coordinator should be able to see that as well.... and then maybe mix up the calls instead of playing man with a single high safety for the entire game while giving up 500 yds through the air.......just sayin’

The IU coaching staff deserves a ton of praise for that game. They had nearly perfect plans on both sides of the ball. Throwing blitzes at Fields all day and getting him rattled on defense and attacking what is clearly a troublesome secondary on offense. They knew they couldn't run, so they didn't bother. Excellent, excellent game called by them.

I'm inclined to give Day a pass for what was just a piss poor effort. I can't think of many clunkers in his 21 games in the seat.... definitely none that approach this.

That said, I have real concerns about this defense and there is now a script to seriously disrupt our offense. They need to get to work on mitigating that. I don't know what you can do in the secondary. I think Coombs is spread too thin coaching those guys and taking on DC duties. But something needs to happen, because if we were to have to face an Alabama, Clempson or even Florida, I don't know that we don't get boat raced by those guys.

We can all agree the secondary has issues but, again, they’re fairly young, and had no summer workout or spring practice. We all love Halfley but he walked into a loaded and, more importantly, EXPERIENCED OSU defense that had take its lumps early.
Most of today was they need to stop falling asleep then gettign beat deep. It wasn't untill their last 2 TD draves they were able to chunk all the way don the field before that it waslways big play big play

Sure and that's surely not ideal but damn 3 straight games with 2 being against 1 win Nebraska and 1 win Ruthers?

Let's put it this way... if Hafley is coaching what do these past 3 games look like?

To me we have back ups in the game and we are doing it paying our staff 500k less per year.

My biggest problem with the D coaches is when it was clear they couldn't run. Why the hell did we stay in the base 4-3... Should have played a lot of nickle especially on 2nd and 3rd and long

Hardly feels like a win with the way we finished. I will definitely give some credit to Indiana, they're a very good team. But not as good as we made them look. Very questionable play calling in the second half on both sides. Fields looked completely fallible and that was his worst game we've seen from him...he's still a great player but I think he got too confident after that first drive. The upside on offense is that we can run the ball and the OL looked pretty damn good today for the most part. On defense, the front 7 is dominant and looked amazing today. But obviously if our secondary doesn't improve drastically, we're in trouble. Wade and Proctor are good, though occasionally a good DB will get beat. Initial impression is that Banks played fairly well. On Hooker, I know he's young but I've seen enough to know he's not our high safety and he's a major liability that other teams will keep exposing if he's in. Have to wonder if we move Proctor back there and start trying other guys out at the other safety spot. Williamson has also been really disappointing and while I was hoping for a big senior campaign, but might be time to give Cavazos and Watts a shot to see what they can do. My analysis on the secondary may not be completely accurate after having just watched the game, but there's no doubt changes need made not only in the personnel of our secondary, but also our coaching.

Some regression is expected when you lose that amount of talent and an outstanding DC, but there's more than enough talent here that it shouldn't look like GERG-era scUM defense.

First, Indiana is a good team. No, they're not Clemson or Bama, and yes I get that there is no confidence for OSU to play well right now. BUT, Clemson has a loss and it wasn't due to Lawrence being out. You can't convince me of that when a backup goes for 450 or whatever. Alabama got fucking lit up by Ole Miss, which has a fucking pathetic excuse for a D, not a good one like Indiana has. So, we can panic, but that also needs to be said.

  1. Fields. Justin played his first bad game, and it's clear he needs to work on quick decision making. That being said, I actually think this is good game film for him to have. Some awful mistakes, some bad ones, and a review of what worked and what didn't against a defense that resembles a hyper-aggressive Clemson.

  2. Offense. Racked up 306 yards rushing and 300 passing. As good as Indiana is at pressuring, they had no answer at times. The running game showed great potential. Reason to be very excited.

  3. Play calling. Day overthought some of the planning and playcalling in this game. The offense ate up yards and yet left lots of opportunities on the table. Instead of taking what the defense was giving them (around 400 yards rushing if called more), Day tried to play this game like all the others; pass to set up the run. At times they diced them up with screens, quick passes, and runs, and then it would inexplicably disappear.

  4. Defense. The back 7 is struggling to communicate and shift to the correct assignments. Part of that is youth, part of that is coaching making things too difficult. Coombs needs to simplify things.

  5. Officiating. The defense struggled, but OPI and holding was continually ignored by officials. And when that happens, you're going to get into a shootout. You can expect the defense to correct assignments, but there's nothing you can do when the pressure you bring is being held and WRs are picking DBs 10 yards down field.
4 games in and I still don't have a good read on this team. At times they look flawless on offense, then there is a sudden shift. It's concerning how up and down they can be. But I also don't think the sky is falling.

A lot of issues we saw today by Fields are aberrations and can be corrected. Same on defense. But yeah, they do have to be addressed. This game will provide good learning opportunities, but it only matters if things are corrected.

No they really aren't... it includes Banks who has seen playing time for 3 years in a row, Wade, Proctor, and Hooker.

This has nothing to do with experience. Nothing.

This is ALSO true of everyone we're playing.... young, no summer workout, etc.

It's not an excuse to let a team with a negative run game put up 500 in the air on you. We didn't adjust when they couldn't run and that speaks to Coombs, not the lack of practice.

You sound like tOSU was the only team hampered by COVID. We weren't.
