Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Report: Ohio State expected to add former Kansas OL to staff

Ohio State’s staff is reportedly getting another addition.

Sunday, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that the Buckeyes are expected to hire former Kansas offensive lineman Reilly Jeffers as an offensive assistant. Jeffers has recently been a member of the staff at Florida Atlantic, where he worked under Lane Kiffin.

Per Feldman, Jeffers spent last year working at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville.

Just hired a new "quality control" guy:

WELCOME ABOARD. Quite a few of Ohio State's quality control and graduate assistant positions need filling in the next few weeks after a few departures this offseason (get those applications ready), but the Buckeyes are already welcoming one new face.

This could be an extremely strategic hire, based on the schedule. Billy Fessler played for current Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead at Penn State and coached under him at Mississippi State.

Ryan Day's out here playing 4D chess.

Ohio State is bringing in some quarterback-coaching assistance for Chip Kelly.

Billy Fessler, who was set to be UCLA’s quarterbacks coach this season until Kelly left to become Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, is reportedly joining the Buckeyes as an offensive analyst, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Fessler previously worked for the Buckeyes in 2020 and 2021 as an offensive graduate assistant. He left to become Akron’s quarterbacks coach in 2022 and was promoted to offensive coordinator at Akron in 2023 before leaving to join Kelly’s UCLA staff in January.

A former Penn State quarterback, Fessler had been shifted into an analyst role at UCLA after new UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster hired Ted White as quarterbacks coach.

“Billy has earned a reputation for his attention to detail toward the quarterback position. I look forward to seeing what he can accomplish on and off the field with our talented quarterback room,” Kelly said in a press release after hiring Fessler at UCLA in January.

Hoping that Day continues to swing for the fences on these vacancies. Would love to bring in a top level guy that isn't even on the radar because they are already successful on a top level team. Maybe Phil Parker is tired of Iowa, haha. I would love to turn into a staff that becomes known for bringing in overqualified guys looking to springboard back to NFL or a head coach position like Saban's staffs became known for. Then, promote MG and give him some additional responsibilities and let him absorb some more knowledge from another top-tier guy.

I'm pretty confident that Day won't make any staffing decisions without shaking the tree first. Even last year when we had one spot left and JL on staff as an analyst, that hire took about a week to make, which leads me to believe we at least put out some feelers to some proven LB coaches before deciding to promote Animal.

If Kelly leaves, it feels like it's a now or never to give Hartline his shot. After six seasons with Day and two with the OC/Co-OC title in name, Day knows if he has what it takes to take full reigns of the offense or not by now.
